Irene and David Tydeman

Irene and David's TR5

Before becoming Group Leader of Abbott and Stour some three to four years ago; my motoring career, if you can call it that, started in the mid sixties, when I purchased my first car - a Morris Minor 1000 two door. You would think that having a reasonable sized engine, it would go quite well - not a bit of it. It was so so on the flat but any kind of hill and you would have to change down to third or second gear. To be honest it would not pull the skin off a rice pudding!

I didn't keep that for too long and luckily only managed to lose £25 when I sold it. I soon moved onto something more sporty - in line with my nature! I happened to catch sight of a gorgeous MK11 Spitfire in dark blue with larger than normal wheels and fancy wheel trims lurking at the back of a car showroom and the "dye was cast" as they say.

BRK 113D was with me for some time before we were introduced to another attractive Spitfire, red this time and a MK111 which belonged to a not unattractive chap called David, who also joined the same car club. We used to travel up and down the country entering different competitive events including autotests, hill climbs etc. until finally we decided to travel in one car (if you know what I mean)! Unfortunately that meant that one car was surplus to requirements and, as BRK was older, had done more miles, I had to part from my first "love".

After a couple of years the allure of two more cylinders became overwhelming so, goodbye Spit and hello GT6. This was followed by a very low milage demonstration Dolomite Sprint, again in blue, which we really liked and kept for a number of years. We also made room for a TR5, more oomph. After that came a Stag (another two more cylinders) great car, which we kept for some thirteen years. That went to make way for a friends Herald Coupe, which I loved the moment I set eyes on it. In 2000 we were lucky enough to win the TR Register raffle prize of a 1982 TR7! In between owning the Sprint and Stag we had a very competitive Dol 1500 which we would use for sprinting.

We are now left with the TR5, which we have owned now for thirty years, the TR7 and the Herald Coupe, so I think you can safely say we are "Triumph Nuts".
