Report and photos by Richard and Hazel Humphries

On a beautiful Saturday in May, 20 members and friends met up at the workshops and showroom of P & A Wood, specialists in the restoration of early and late Rolls Royces and Bentleys, at Great Easton, Essex. We were treated to coffee and biscuits then split into two groups and given guided tours of the workshops where we saw some beautiful cars undergoing restoration, including one or two very rare models, from a Silver Ghost to Simon Cowell’s ‘stretched’ modern Rolls. The guides were very informative and the tour was interesting, even for the ladies in the party.  We then spent some time wandering around the showroom where there were some lovely cars for sale, but no deals were done! We then made our way to the local pub where we partook of an excellent lunch and plenty of cool drinks.

After lunch we set off in convoy to just outside Saffron Walden to a private airfield where we had a quick tour of the main hangar which was being decorated up for a 1940’s hangar dance that evening. Outside were two Messerschmitts and various bi-planes but the Spitfire we’d hoped to see was at Duxford Air Museum for a show. However, we intend to arrange another visit when it’s back and other wartime items will be on show.

It was agreed by all that we had an excellent day with glorious weather and plenty to see of interest.
