TR Action 253

The August bank holiday weekend lived up to its annual lack of summer sun, but that did not put off a hardy few guys and girls from the Birmingham group. Bank Holiday Sunday saw a handful of TR members attending the Somers club family day. We also were graced with the presence of CVTR’s very own Mr. Canning. It was nice to see Andy back up supporting the Register following his recent car accident. This was a new event for the Group, attending their host's own event. Many pints of real ale were quaffed and the hog roast did not take too long to vanish. Along with most of the raffle and nearest the pin prizes being won by the Birmingham group; our Tina won a designer watch, team 710’s Nick (commonly known as the slacker) won a bottle of vino and Mr Barnett shuffled home with five year old single malt. An excellent afternoon was had by all and this being the first time the club has attended such an event, I am sure it will not be the last. Even Merv enjoyed a few pints of Old Scruttocks finest ales.

After a nights rest, four Birmingham group cars made their way to the Pershore plum festival. Two new members joined Phil Barnet in his six and Phil and Tracey in their seven and parked up along with the CVTR group on the lawn of the Abbey. The combined group had one of the largest group/club stands within a plethora of nearly 300 classic cars, including Rollers, VWs, MGs and a host of pre-war beauties. The plum festival proved to be a packed day with stalls, activities and of course a never ending supply of plum infused beers , wines scones etc.. the list goes on. Once again may I take this opportunity to thank CVTR for extending the invitation to the Birmingham group. It is nice to enjoy displaying our vehicles with like-minded enthusiasts in great surroundings. Hopefully we shall be lucky enough to be invited again next year...

TR Action 251

June saw the Birmingham group hold their annual Concours d’Elegance on the lawn of our new home, the Somers Sports and Social Club. The warm dry weather, an excellent barbeque and over thirty cars attending made for an enjoyable evening. We were pleased to welcome some old friends, Graham and Lynne Hodges and Mark and Jo Field from Jigsaw Racing. Mark was asked to present a trophy for the car he would most like to take home. This went to Phillip Barnet and his stunning French blue TR6. The evening saw some new vehicles to the group and provided some serious head scratching as to which car to vote for.

This year’s Masters’ Class was sponsored by David Manners and was won by Phil Blake with his splendid TR 250, PAL 500L. Congratulations to Phil for his superb car and yet another trophy won by CVTR from the Birmingham group. I feel we shall have to step up a gear and start winning some trophies back. We also offered an excellent array of prizes for our raffle, including a rather expensive Autoglym Valet Kit donated by one of our sponsors. A big thank you to all who donated prizes for the raffle, TR Register, David Manners and the Guys from the Birmingham Group.

We also invited Arden MG and other classic car clubs. Two guys did attend from Team 710, but not in their MGs. They arrived in an Aston Martin Vantage for us to take a look at. Also in attendance were a Triumph Spitfire, an MG TF and a very impressive Triumph Stag. The results of the Concours d’Elegance:

The Jigsaw Racing Trophy, for the car you would most like to go home in, was presented to Phillip Barnet in his TR6, GDD 78K. And finally Merv was proud to present the much sought after Wooden Spoon to a worthy contender. Carl Daniels, for his Grand entrance with an Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

The guys from Birmingham also attended the Curbrough sprint on the following day. Once again thank you to Dave Newbury for his organisation and an excellent day.

TR Action 250

The Group report comes around so fast, you have just finished reading the latest copy of TR Action when another drops on the mat. Over March and into April, the Birmingham group have been a busy bunch. Firstly let me take this opportunity to applaud Lynne Marshall and Eros who attended Crufts, and walked away with a first in class. Eros is now looking forward to more shows but still enjoys relaxing in his favourite seat.

Quite a few of the group attended Stoneleigh for the Triumph Spares day. From a personal point, it was a great chance to meet up with our active members and sign up some new faces. Many bargains were to be had as the new season is well and truly upon us; those purchased ranged from a service kit to a portable 12v television.

We have also had one of our first outings with an inter group skittles match. Yes Birmingham group attended the CVTR skittles evening with every intention of bringing the celebrated trophy back into the West Midlands: this unfortunately did not happen. The evening was well attended with Birmingham members but alas no joy, CVTRs won by a small margin of 24 skittles. Never mind we shall return. We must thank Our Tina for a dazzling display, Her highest score of 24 skittles put the guys to shame.

On May 1st, after all the Wedding celebrations are over, our group attended the Coventry Museum of Transport, on the penultimate day of the “Le Mans Throughout the Age’s” exhibition. This is a major event for the Birmingham group as we wanted to showcase the group and the TR Register. I have submitted a full report of the day.
