TR Action 241

I was surprised to get the email asking for the copy for our social report as, like you, I was excitedly expecting the TRR History Book in place of this TR Action. As you will have read elsewhere, the publication has been delayed a bit for very understandable reasons.

Here we are in March already and spring is not that far away. At least the snow is long gone but probably not forgotten. Although we were not as badly affected in our part of the world as some, it still caused the cancellation of our January meeting and prevented some people from attending the TRR 40th Anniversary celebrations. I cannot remember a meeting ever being cancelled due to bad weather before. Shame, but at least there were no significant mishaps and everyone is safe to attend another day.

We have our list of events together and it certainly looks as though 2010 will be another busy, fun-filled TRing year with exciting new things as well as some old favourites. Complete details of all the events can be found on our website at www.chiltern-trs.co.uk. Do take a look and write the dates in your diary now to avoid finding yourself double booked in future.

So now we are all set. The events are planned, the cars have been sorted, now all we need is some decent weather!

Our regular monthly meetings at The Peacock in Henton are well attended and, having use of a function room, we are able to show films and put on presentations too. If you have not been able to get along to a meeting yet, perhaps now is the time to make a special effort. You can be assured of a warm welcome, as well as great food and good beer. Check the website for details and directions.

I hope to see you all at a Chiltern event some time soon.

Well, that’s Christmas over for another year. I hope you all remember that you had a good time and that you are still speaking to your relatives…

We finished December with a couple of meetings. First was a very well attended lunch followed by visit to Claydon House, to see the Christmas Fair (for last minute fleecing opportunities) and second was the Chiltern Christmas Dinner. This was our first Christmas event at our new home, The Peacock at Henton, and very good it was too. Some of us chose to stay over, rather than argue about whose turn it was to drive, and found the rooms clean, comfortable and very reasonably priced. Martin and his staff looked after us so well.

It is January already. The 40th Anniversary Meeting has come and gone and I am pleased that we as a group were able to contribute towards making the day such a great success. Well done to Kevin Jones and all the organisers.

We are now into a new year and we have planned a busy events calendar for 2010; some are new and some old favourites. A complete list of dates and details can be found on our website at: www.chiltern-trs.co.uk

Perhaps it’s time to make a New Year’s resolution? If you have not made it along to a Chiltern Group meeting or event before, why not get out the diary now and make a note of a few dates? If you can bring your TR, we would love to see it, and if you can’t, no matter, come along anyway. You can be sure of a warm welcome at The Peacock, or any other event, from a friendly and enthusiastic bunch of TR people. It will be a lot of fun and I know that you will enjoy it. And ladies, it’s not all about oily bits.

See you soon?

Blimey, this “Chiltern Chat” comes round quick and I have no idea what to say this time. Wait a minute, we have got a big story. It is congratulations to Geoff Wooldridge, our very own Deputy GL, who was honoured at the AGM with the Register’s Gold Award. This recognition is truly deserved by someone who epitomises all things good about the TR fraternity. A long serving stalwart of the Register and committed supporter of Chilterns TR, Geoff is well known by many for his charitable endeavours. The annual Wallingford show really would be a much poorer affair without his efforts behind the scenes – photo shows Geoff in action - and his many and varied contributions to the life of Chilterns Group would be sorely missed. In addition to his efforts within TR circles, Geoff also provides a guiding hand for the local Civil Service Motoring Association and all this while keeping his redoubtable TR2 going, complete with its little caravan in tow, and bringing  a Model “T” bus back to life. Congratulations to Geoff and to Christine for letting him do it all.

Our year is beginning to wind down although judged by attendance at our monthly meetings you would never know. The mid-monthly pub run (orange juice of course) at a changing venue is also proving popular and, over time, will bring TR’ing into all corners of our patch. I can see this becoming “Our Favourite Local” competition with a celebratory revisit in the spring/summer for the top pub.

At Goodwood Revival, a top event in the calendar of many classic “automobilists”, Stirling Moss celebrated his eightieth birthday (it seems only last year that I watched him doing it to Fangio - oh well tempus fugit); the man in the moon, Buzz Aldrin, dropped in: the ubiquitous Mini wowed everyone on its fiftieth and the only flying Avro Vulcan put in a much appreciated appearance. All of this in addition to the usual diet of some thrilling classic racing. Chilterns were elegance personified by the attendance of Peter and Heather, Simon and Sue and Hywel and Ingram in period dress. Peter’s TR4A suffered a broken throttle linkage en-route (well you have to keep your hand in don’t you?) but he was soon on his way again thanks to a clever man in Newbury with a welder.

On a different scale but no less pleasurable, October 4th saw the last All Triumph Day at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, organised by the TSSC. Blessed with lovely weather we enjoyed a marvellous turnout of Triumph cars in all their many guises. Good to see close collaboration between clubs to make the day such a success and well done TSSC for taking the lead. The weather was less than kind for the Malvern Classic and auto jumble organised by Greenwood Exhibitions on 11th October. Question: have you ever really found something vital and going for a song at an auto jumble? Answers on the forum perhaps? See you next time.
