TRs at TRegrehan - The Golden Years

***NEW 04-03-2011***

The reappearance of TRs at the Tregrehan Hillclimb course near St. Austell in September 2010, marked a welcome return of the marque after a break of what I believe to be almost thirty years.

During the Sixties and Seventies, TRs frequently appeared on the entry lists for the events which were organised by Truro & District Motor Club. The challenging course is about 600yards in length and a well-driven TR would cover this in the mid-20seconds.

Missing from this selection of images is Alan Berriman from Camborne who often performed with his white TR2 and latterly a Sienna Brown TR6, KCV303L. The doctor and his wife from Devon could be relied on to post good times with their TR6. If anyone has any TR shots from this venue, they would be gratefully received.

KOVC-1978

Here are some shots from the 1978 Kernow Old Vehicle Club's Annaul Rally at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge.

Back then the Register was welcome with all its TRs, no matter how new they were. My 5 was probably the youngest TR there, being less than ten years old at that time.

The TR2 with hood erect was UPG775 owned by member 323, Mike Rayment. This was the last public appearance of the car before Mike started a rebuild which he has still not quite finished.

In September 1981, when Keith Boddy from Par had his TR5 stolen from outside the Recreation Centre in St.Austell, he thought he would never see it again.  He was contacted by the Police some days later to inform him that it had been located at Caradon Mine near Liskeard. The Western Morning News made little of the fact that hooligans had thrown a classic British sportscar over a cliff. The appeal of a stranded lamb and its rescuer was much more newsworthy.

I believe I took these shots in 1982 when Summer meant long, hot days ideal for driving around the magnificent Cornish countryside with the top down. We were on a well attended club run taking in the Land's End peninsula. The Engine Inn is situated at Nancledra on the B3311 between St.Ives and Penzance. At that time the pub was run by Les Rowe, brother of local comedian Jethro. From left to right in the first shot TRs were owned by: Alan Penrose, Rodney Toft, Malcolm Freeman, Me and Les Rowe.

Not a Cornishman and not in Cornwall. But, Stuart Heath could see Cornwall as he gave his 3A a workout at the autotest organised by the Tamarside Triumph Sportscar Club on Plymouth Hoe on 6th May 1973.

Still not in Cornwall. These shots were taken at Mumford's Garage at Marsh Barton, Exeter by TR3A - owning Peter Perrett from Torquay. They record the final fuel stop on the TR Register John o'Groats to Land's End Run to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee in June 1977.

This shot was taken at Charlestown near St.Austell around 1985. It shows the Julian Stephens TR5 and the TR6 owned by his cousin Simon Robins. Over a number of years both cars were sold to a gentleman in Surrey. In 2007 the owner moved to Wadebridge and the TRs are now back together in Cornwall.

These pictures were taken on the afternoon of 9th March 2002 and show Len Olds in action on the Powderham Historic Rally. This was the year Len won the HRCR Classic Challenge.

More of the nation's best from Cornwall. In November 2003, Angela and Andy McGowan became Autoglym National Concours Champions with their superb TR5.
