Towards the end of October we were delighted to take up an invitation from the Wessex Group to a skittles evening. Both groups turned out in, what can only be described as, massive numbers – I think there were around 56 people to bowl! We had a great evening at the Elm Tree in Ringwood where we enjoyed a good meal and a chance to get to know members of a neighbouring group better. Wessex were very welcoming and friendly and we thank them for setting up the evening. Of course I must report the result (you’ll see why in a moment!) Due to the huge numbers we only managed two rounds and, at first, the teams looked very close with Wessex taking the first round by a few points; however... when it came to the second I have to say that we thrashed them. Now I could be gentlemanly and say it was “all square” i.e. a round each but, in all truth, I can’t see it that way! We look forward to meeting up again soon. Thanks also to John and Janet who organised our last run of the year. At the very end of October a small but select group of eight cars took off on what I am told was a fairly typical John route (which, in my experience, usually means grass and mud, if not water) around Milton Abbas, Mappowder, Batcombe Ridge and Folke, ending in Sherborne at the Sherborne Hotel. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the meal and Bob, who was on his own that day (aaahhh), won the “spot the photo” competition which takes some doing whilst driving! At our last meeting we ran a DVD of Peter and Marilyn’s experiences of Italian passes (Marilyn says these Italians are always making passes) and we were amazed by the run down the zigzags of the Stelvio. Peter has an ambition to get a group of us up there in TRs one of these years so I am not sure it was such a good idea to run the DVD in front of likely passengers! If you have not got time to go yourselves it is well worth exploring on Google Earth “Street View”. In our next report we’ll find out how we all behaved over the festive season, if I can remember the festive season, and whether there is any earth-shattering news from the AGM. But, in the mean time, as you read this it is not too late to suggest a group activity for the year ahead and certainly not too late to resolve to get involved – the more the merrier – and we like to be merry! Happy New Year!
Whilst there were fewer cars on this year’s expedition across La Manche, our trip to Angoulême was thoroughly enjoyed by all. An uneventful crossing and a quick run from Cherbourg took us to Brian and Linda’s selected overnight at Tours and what an interesting town that was. We ate in its medieval heart where a local walked his tame goat amongst the bustling crowds. Onwards the next day to Angoulême, already throbbing to the sounds of supercharged exhausts preparing for the “Circuit des Remparts” racing the next day. We settled ourselves into our gîte in Cressé that evening, Deb having picked up the first of our visiting Labradors whilst Linda had met other, smaller, friends. Race day was as exciting as ever and nearly as wet – how is it that they time those downpours for 6 o’clock? The rest of the week was a relaxed mix of local visits, the odd chateau and some very quiet roads (why isn’t that riverbed even on my sat-nav Chris?). Many thanks to Brian and Linda for all the arrangements, bookings, etc. Car problems? Just a few – the country roads found a few nuts and bolts that were not quite tight enough, I had yet another condenser failure on the way back and we had a few overheating issues (is this the dreaded ethanol Chris Cunnington was discussing in TR Action 253?) – but nothing stops Dorset Group for long! Another splendid town for the overnight on the way back was Vitré – well worth a visit. Carrie and I drove lead car most of the holiday and I am still trying to break back into the ménage à trois she seems to have developed with a certain Monsieur Michelin and a chap called TomTom! Since we got back Tony and Viv have come up with a very enjoyable twist on the normal Treasure Hunt. After a short, very pleasant, run we found ourselves in Wimborne on a walk around the town looking for clues - as you would expect some proved more tricky than others and you had to develop a knack of looking without being seen to look! Another short run took us to a very enjoyable lunch in the garden of The Black Horse at Sturminster Marshall. We have found a way of stopping Tony and Viv winning by getting them to organise the event but we failed to stop Chris and Marion who, in a close run finish, once more took away the trophy. This has been a busy time for annual events as the last meeting featured Margaret and Geoff’s much-anticipated quiz. Tricky in places and extra tricky in others we had great fun and well taxed brains – thanks to them for putting it together. I expect the girls are already sorting out party clothes and the chaps are checking to see if the DJ has shrunk yet again for it’s that time of year once more. The Dorset Group Christmas partynight is in Christchurch on the 3rd of December and then in January we will be down at Limpley Stoke for our regular get together with a bunch of other TR groups for a fun weekend which Glavon are organising this year. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year and we look forward to spending time with old and new friends during 2012. If you do not already join in with the group I am sure you would find something to enjoy and friendly people to meet, so do come along.
The last TR Action included thanks to Elaine and Michael for organising another great run; but, as it was published, Dorset Group were shocked and greatly saddened by news of Elaine’s death. Elaine Thwaites was one of our most respected and loved members. She was a very proud owner of XKM 432, her beloved TR3A, which she bought in 1967 and she was also proud of the fact that she was a relatively early member of the Register. Her membership number was 2874 and I believe that there are only just over 200 current members with a lower number. Elaine was a great supporter of the group, always up for events and trips and always willing to organise a run or host a social – we will never forget the 50th birthday party she threw for XKM, or her tables groaning with such choices of soups, food and deserts as could only be marvelled at. Magnificent home made jams and marmalade turned up for our weekends away and for raffle prizes. Elaine had been struggling with various medical issues for the last few years but we all admired the fortitude with which she tackled them and “carried on”. Most of all we will miss her warmth, her friendship and her wisdom. The Dorset Group and its members meant a lot to Elaine and many of us were able to attend her woodland burial, several in TRs. I am sure Elaine would now want me to press on and tell you about the various events we have been involved in recently. A few of us crossed the border to visit The George at Longbridge Deverill for their annual Noggin Nosh & Natter and enjoyable, and growing, gathering with a wide variety of treasured vehicles – yes someone truly treasures that RN petrol tanker! Visiting yet another county (we get about you know) around twenty of us joined the Kennet Valley Group at the Annual Classic Vehicle Show at the Newbury Racecourse. Thanks to KVG who hosted a splendid picnic (and the show was equally enjoyable!). Heading west for a change, Derek & Margaret took us on a run to Buckham Fair. New to us all, this is a charity event put on by Martin & Philippa Clunes on their land near Beaminster. A good old-fashioned fair with rides, displays, pony and dog shows, local products, trade stands, food court including ‘deli’ – you get the picture – we thoroughly enjoyed it and the splendid cream tea Margaret had organised with her helpers. Home made scones cream and jam – what more could we ask for? Unfortunately we finally had to call off (or rather, postpone) our Gymkhana as too few people were available to justify the effort involved – but don’t worry, it will be back on the schedule next year in a better slot. So what next? Well you have probably just got time to sharpen you brain and join us for Margaret & Geoff’s Quiz Night on Thursday 13th October and plenty of time to dust off the TR for our last run of the year on Sunday 30th October. We would be very pleased to see you at either and/or both and/or group meetings.
