TR Action 230

Sunday 3rd August Martyn Bell and I went along to the Pickering Traction Engine rally, which this year seemed bigger than ever. Chris Lloyd was off with pneumonia so we missed seeing his cars, but found Paul Fenwick’s TR4A on display. We also discovered a line in Triumph belt buckles, which we wore the next evening to the monthly meeting. There they were greeted with general amazement (that we would actually be seen wearing such things). Guy Lowley brought along Nick Densley for the first time in a red TR6 that he’d acquired from Guy. Hello Nick.
10th August was Tim Robinson’s run. Those following me in the convoy will be grateful that I’d got the split in my sump safely brazed up (and apologies for the way and manner in which I corrosion treated Roger Myers TR5 on the way back from Malvern). The run was blessed with a good attendance and sun shone as far as the edge of the Moors, then came some rain, heavy at times. Thanks to Malcolm Quill for the suggestion that I apply Rainex to my hair. A great run Tim. Well done.
The Bells and ourselves had decided to let the TRs have a run in Austria this year. We had ascended the Grossglockner Hochtor in heavy hail and sleet (8,400 or so feet), only to find that they wouldn’t let us back in either direction. A minibus with chains fitted turned up to collect the shop staff. At this point we started fielding calls from Tim wanting to know if we were going to the Harewood BARC hill climb. Hope you enjoyed the hill climb as much as we enjoyed Austria. That was our only day with bad weather. The rest was very sunny and warm. We did get caught in an Austrian speed trap though! We also saw a couple of TR6s in Austria, who waved back but didn’t have time to stop. Being back home on the 30th August meant that I could head off to Cadwell, on Sunday 31st August, for the VSCC meeting, with Tim and a bunch of the others in shared cars.
In this period we also had quite a few Group members at the TR Register Summer Ball, and again at the Lakes Weekend. For a small Group we seem to be fairly active between us all.

Friday 13th June doesn’t sound an auspicious day, but was our Gliding evening. Given the enjoyment of those who took part it seems we may be asking Phil to repeat this next year. Thanks to Phil Warkup for all the organization.
The next day saw some of us at the VSCC Hawthorn Memorial trophy meeting at Oulton Park. Local member Charles Gillett was competing in his Frazer Nash and happily saw off all comers including an ERA in one race. Well done Charles, and what is happening with the racing TR2?
Wharfedale’s Castle Howard weekend was well supported by our EasTRiding Group members, and 11th to 13th July was our very own Yorkshire Dales Weekend, at Aysgarth. Saturday morning’s run involved taking the climb up the “Tank Road” and going on to Richmond. Here different groups did their own thing. We went off for a walk out of town to Saint Agatha’s (but didn’t find any Lamborghinis). Re-convening for the longer afternoon run, we came back along Swaledale, over Buttertubs Pass and around a loop of Semer Water. Sunday’s run, in brilliant sunshine, took us through Kettlewell, over Littondale and Malham, to lunch at the gastro pub in Hetton (The Angel). Gerry Lloyd took the distance award and was given the Delaware Valley Triumphs sweatshirt and instructed to be wearing it alongside his Concours winning TR6 at Malvern the following weekend. However Best Car award on the runs went to Paul Ash, who also took the Car Recognition Quiz award by a half mark (with a consolation award going to Tim Robinson). Oldest Car present was Phil Warkup with his TR2; oldest person present was Arthur Williams’s (Bristol) mother Ruby at 90+.
A few of us made it to the International for the fun and to meet old friends. Gerry Lloyd was wearing that Sweatshirt, all splattered with AutoGlym, and yes he got Gold for his Standard TR6. We helped him celebrate later…
Mary & Jill Bell had been trying to organize a ladies only event and on 25th July a group of the ladies went off to see the film Mamma Mia and a drink afterwards. They say it is because the press described it as “A Triumph”.

TR Action 228
With three different car shows happening on 11th May 2008, and some members showing their cars, a slightly depleted field met up on the Driffield by-pass. So it was not surprising that whilst we were assembling many other classics went past. Our route took us through Sledmere, Forge Valley, and the hairpins up to Silpho, then through Harwood Dale Forest. After briefly picking up the coast road we headed off down a 1 in 4 and up a 1 in 3, picked up the Pickering road, and turned off for Grosmont. Another 1 in 3 took us down to the Grosmont, North Yorks Moors Railway. Up again for Egton and up yet again for Egton Bridge. From there we took the old Roman road down to Cropton, crossing Pike Hill and Wheeldale Moors. Cropton has a micro-brewery but was also having a music festival. Why was I leading the run in the non-TR – because the TR3A had suffered lots of rubbish in its fuel the previous day. Malcolm Quill had problems too, running the bearing on his alternator. However, with summer-like temperatures the scenery was excellent. Alison Quill said that we ought to call it the Garlic Run as there was so much garlic out in full white flower, and scent.
On the 10th some for us had met up to go across to Harwood Hill Climb and support Guy Lowley (in a non-TR). There was a TR class too. I didn’t make it. The TR3A had so much rubbish in the fuel that it kept stopping with fuel starvation, so I headed back to clean the lines.
Our next run was 8th June, a brilliantly sunny and warm day. Roger and Anita Myers had a run starting from the Deep Dale lay-by on the A1079. They went through villages to the south of the A1079 then north through Nunburnholme, Great Givendale, Bishop Wilton and Youlthorpe, then back through Fangfoss and Wilberfoss to lunch in North Duffield. After lunch they went on to the Breighton Airfield to view the old aircraft which operate from there. There had been some changes in the date for this event, so we will try to repeat the destination another year when it doesn’t class with other events and we can arrange to display the TRs next to the old aircraft. The change in date had caught us out, as we had committed to going to the Derbyshire Dales weekend. Thanks for the organization Roger and Anita, and now you have the contacts to repeat the venture. Next flying is this Friday evening, when we all go gliding.
