TR Action 255

Our EasTRiding Group’s AGM was held on the 7th November at our usual meeting place, the Light Dragoon, Etton. Mike Braddock withdrew as our long serving Treasurer. He felt that having now acquired a Mk II E-Type without having been caught with his hand in the till that he ought to get out whilst the going was good, and passed the financial opportunity on to Roger Myers. Seriously, Mike has served in a necessary office for many years and many thanks are due. Cheers Mike and Peta. Many thanks to Roger for stepping into the post.

13th November was our annual Remembrance Day Run. Roger and Anita Myers (new Treasurer) organized this one for us. On a dark grey day we had mist on the tops of the Wolds and in pockets in the Vale of York. The large group of TRs headed off through North Newbald, Holme on Spalding Moor, Everingham, and Bubwith. We drove an unsurfaced road across Skipwith Common, where we stopped for a short walk (along Bomb-Bay Walk) to a War Memorial in the form of a recovered propeller from a crashed aircraft. We continued on through Elvinigton, Sutton on Derwent and Bolton to lunch at the Fleece Inn, Bishop Wilton, where an exceedingly good repast was had by all. Many of the trees on the route were still golden with leaves and brown ferns were still standing. Janet Ash was heard to murmur that the mist patches added a thoroughly Autumnal touch; all very seasonal. Very good run Roger and Anita.

And it was Rog and I who were the sole EasTRiding representatives in Gaydon at the TR Register’s AGM on 27th November. You can all come along too, you know!

Forthcoming Events:

15th January: No run, but lunch at The Light Dragoon for 12.30
12th February: Snow Drops Walk: Meet at Deep Dale, A1079 for 10.30. Tel: 01482 872175 for details.
11th March: Paul & Janet’s Cobwebs Run. Blow the cobwebs out of your TRs. 10.30 at Deep Dale A1079, contact Paul and Janet Ash on 01482 679 807 for details

TR Action 254

The period since TR Action 253 has been fairly active, as usual.  The beginning of this period was spent encouraging Roger Myers to get out in his newly rebuilt TR5 (see photo with chassis at CTM in TR Action 248) and get some miles on it, for a first oil change and head retorquing. The debugging process got through several fuel pumps.

The September run on the 11th saw a good turn-out of TRs heading off on many roads new to our runs, away from our usual area. Brian & Karen Carr the organizers took us over the Vale of York to Beal, and a great lunch at their local. They come to monthly meetings and runs from over near the M62 / A1 junction each time, so have quite a run just to get to the start of our events. Well done Brian & Karen.

Thursday 15th September saw five Group cars heading for the Pride of Hull ferry, across to Europoort, for the Belgian organized TR European Meeting. This is a larger turnout than we usually get on this event. Messrs Ash, Bell & Quill were doing the Weekend, whilst the Myers and ourselves were doing the Tour afterwards as well, and then going to Spa for the classic car races and Spa 6 Hours Race.

I told the Guys that I would take them via “my” town of Landen, in Belgium. A Battle was fought there in 1693, which William of Orange lost. The Earl of Lucan was on the winning (French) side, but was wounded and died the following day. There’s a Landen Road in Dublin, named after this Battle. The Earl’s wife was from Mary Landen’s home town in Ireland. When the Belgian Tour organizers heard of this they arranged a “State” visit to Landen on our behalf, with drinks reception in the Town Hall, where gifts were exchanged. It was the 800th anniversary of the founding of the town.

Roger Myers’ debugging of his TR5 continued in Belgium, with a rear hub swop. The inner UJ end of the axle came in useful later when we came upon a broken down German fellow tourist in a TR4A, who had snapped a UJ.

The Spa 6 Hours Race included local member Charles Gillett, who did extremely well to finish 16th out of 109 in his light-weight E-Type. Charles is a genuine privateer, which is something when you see the size of some of the other Equipes at this event.

9th October was our Autumn Leaves Run, which Dave & Barbara Bilton have very ably organized for the last several years. There was another excellent turn-out of TRs, despite the iron grey skies.  We welcomed Tim Robinson back now that he has a working engine in his TR4A. This year Dave & Barbara took us all up to Rosedale to lunch. Another really good event.

We managed not to clash with Wharfedale’s Autumn Leaves run, so on 16th October four cars headed off for a day in the Dales with friends from Wharfedale and Red Rose Groups. The pub in Litton did extremely well, turning out good roasts, in a timely fashion for the large numbers. Thanks to John Hussey for another excellent day out.

Forthcoming Events:

10th December: Christmas Party (now fully booked) at the Ferguson Fawsitt Inn. Remember new venue.

2nd January: Monthly meeting

14th January: No Run, but lunch at The Light Dragoon for 12.30.

TR Action 253

The TR Register International Weekend at Harrogate on 29th to 31st July attracted far more of the EasTRiding Group than usually travel down to southern latitudes. A party of us booked accommodation this time, so, with a roof over our heads at night, more of the wives came too. So the “formal” meal on the Saturday was particularly appreciated. The weekend was enjoyed by all. When are you coming back? We stayed for the Monday too and checked out venues for next year’s Aysgarth weekend (yes a year in the planning!).

Malcolm and Alison Quill organized our run on Sunday 7th August. They took us over lots of roads we had not used very much in recent years, along the western edge of the Wolds and into the Vale of York, entertaining us all with the route. Some of us, Mary included, said that they had not been on the roads before. Well done Malcolm & Alison. I think we had better gloss over the unfortunate stop for some people to put up hoods! We ultimately dined leisurely at the George Hotel in Easingwold.
