Even though the snow was lovely, what a battering it has done to the roads and the cars, with the giant potholes. Luckily the snow was not as bad for us when Kevin and Jane held this year’s winter walk on Sunday the 3rd January. The event was a great hit with over thirty people attending plus five dogs. The walk took us around Hawksbury Upton countryside including some pretty steep hills. Kevin said it was a slight hill but blimey, I nearly died and I was not the only one. At the end of the walk, we popped in for a quick pint, before going back to a warm hearty meal that Jane had made. The Glavon ladies as always brought the puddings, which were lush (pudding girl, I’m afraid). The event was a great start to the year; thanks to Kevin and Jane for organising it. January 10th was the 40th Anniversary for the TR Register at Hopcrofts Holt, as you all know. Even though it was really bad weather, over one hundred people attended. Glavon was asked to help by Kevin to do some entertainment so as a team we came up with games, such as name the ten TRs, name the cars from the 70s, a word search and a feely bag game. A lot of people enjoyed themselves taking part. It was nice being in the first TR meeting place especially as I started my membership there too. January saw another great weekend full of Glavon members at Limpney Stoke. As every year, Friday night we walked up to The Rose and Crown for an evening meal. Saturday, after a fulfilling breakfast, we decided to work off that xmas blubber by doing a lovely walk down the towpath to Bath. At Bath, we went our separate ways, some shopping, others sightseeing and some to the spa. The party started when we got back with the 4-course meal and more drinks. Glavon spent the rest of the night dancing away. After our goodbyes on the Sunday, the Harbour-Swains and Smiths went straight to the forest to do some more organising for the Glavon weekend. So DO NOT forget to put the date in the diary. We rounded the weekend up by sending off two cheques from the raffle that Lesley and mum had done to Exmouth RNLI and Gloucester Air Ambulance. Many Thanks goes to Neville and Chris for organising a great weekend again. Coming up:- Sunday, March 7th, Chris and Jan are doing a run through Somerset & Dorset to visit the Oakham treasures and farm shop. Meet at 10.20am at Aust services, off M48 at Junction 1. April 11th, trip to Coventry transport museum. Sunday 9th May is Wheelnuts at St Roses school, Stroud and in May is Glavons camping weekend. See advert in TR Action for more detail. For any other information on events please phone Maddog or Nigel Ind.
Christmas comes and goes so quickly. I do hope that everyone had a lovely Christmas and did not eat too much. My partner, Andy and I certainly enjoyed our first Christmas in our new home together. Starting off with November, Marcus and Alison held their first event for Glavon. They decided to do a scenic fun run in the Sandy Lane/ Naish Hill near Chippenham based on the Tulip Rally systems. The route covered 10-15 miles, and lasted about 1½ hours, but along with the directions, there were some cryptic questions based on the route and a quiz on the Mini and the TR6. The directions then took us back to the meeting place, The George at Sandy Lane for Sunday lunch. Afterwards they announced who won the quiz: Robert and Lesley. A very big well done and thank-you goes to Marcus and Alison for the fantastic event they organised. November 15th, we held our AGM at Hunter Hall upstairs in the meeting room. As you can see from the outcome, you are stuck with me, for at least another year that is. Now lets start the celebrations of Christmas. Glavon held their Christmas meal on Saturday 5th of December at the Anchor Inn at Oldbury-on- Severn and was a full success with plenty of fun, games and frolics. The food was a three course, starting us off at 8.00pm with the challenge of making your own table decoration as well as paper quizzes. After the meal, we had a visit from Santa and three of his hot elves with a sack full of wonderful present and the awards. He presented the awards for Maddog, whilst he was up at the bar (hehe). The Appreciation award went to Rob and Lesley, the Prestige award went to Eric Mobley and the Wally award went to Alisdair for losing the convoy on his own wedding. After more games, we thought about heading home. Thanks to everyone who organised the Xmas bash. Coming up: Sunday lunch at the Pear Tree Inn, Charfield, Wotton- under-Edge, but limited number of 32. This is on Sunday 7th February. Natter & Noggin at the Hunters Hall on Thursday 18th February. March 7th, Chris and Jan are doing the run through Somerset & Dorset; further details to follow on this event. If you are interested please call Maddog (group leader) or Nigel Ind (events coordinator).
You can so tell that Autumn is here. Wet, windy and cold. I feel that it could snow for Christmas, but the weather has not stopped us as a group. It started off with several Glavonites camping for the weekend at the Goodwood Revival, 17th-19th September. The theme for the Saturday Goodwood revival was the 40s, 50s and 60s – no problem, as you are all probably aware, Glavoners like to get dressed up, fancy dress or otherwise. Those that went to Goodwood really enjoyed the range of cars, aeroplanes and racing, later settling back at the campsite to enjoy a BBQ and of course a few drinks. Sunday 4th October, it was Nigel and Jeanna’ scatter hunt and fun quiz. Five cars met Nigel and Jeanna in Malmesbury to start the hunt by grid reference being plotted on the maps and the quiz questions being looked at closely. The route took the group around the picturesque countryside and mostly deserted country lanes, eventually finishing off at Cleevleys in Lea, where more quiz questions had to be answered, which were in three themed sections relating to cars in films, cars and their owners in old tv programmes and the Italian Job. Jeanna had prepared some lovely traditional Aga hot food and of course some scrummy puddings. The scores were all added up (whilst eating), and it turned out that Andy and Jill won and were given a lovely bottle of bubbly. Well done to everyone who joined in, but also a huge thanks to Nigel and Jeanna for a well planned event. On 15th October, it was Phil and Alison’s annual quiz night held upstairs at Hunters Hall. When we all arrived, we found that we were being raided by the Mini Rebels (which is the mini club that Toni attends on a monthly basis) but it wasn’t just a couple, there were twelve of them. In all, there were six teams with six people in each - a great turn out. The quiz had a twist to it. We had to spin the wheel (which was made beautifully even with a clicker, using Phil’s bicycle wheel) to select the category. We then had to answer the questions in the team and if we got it right we had to spin the wheel again, but then spinning it around to gamble the point. Our events that are coming up are: the Christmas Meal at the Anchor Inn at Oldbury-on-Severn, on the 5th December; and walking around Hawkesbury Upton on the 3rd of January to work off some of the calories that have been built up over Christmas. If you would like any further information on any of our events you can contact Maddog on 01285 657539.
