TR Action 255

I would like to start the report with a HUGE thank-you to Kevin Jones for doing the splendid and hard work co-ordinating all of his West area, giving plenty of support; thank-you Kevin. You will be dearly missed from the other West area members but we just can’t get rid of you. Hehe.

Anyway Thursday 20th October was Phil and Alison’s quiz night at the hall. They had really thought about it as some members wanted it to be a car themed quiz. It was very challenging but factual at the same time (felt like being back at school). As you may have already guessed, my team came last and it was Kevin’s team that came first. Well done to all and thanks to the Critchleys for organising it - but please can we have it easier next time?

November the 6th was firework night, hosted by Chris and Jan at Oldbury on Severn. Jan had made a fantastic range of savoury food which was demolished before the display, which was held in the field behind their house. Everyone had brought big fireworks, so it really did go off with a bang. For afters, the Glavon ladies had made the puddings. The evening was lovely and welcoming.

Thursday 17th November was the AGM. As you have noticed Andy West and I have been voted in to continue with writing the report - sorry! The meeting went smoothly with everyone doing the same jobs as last year. The diary page is slowly building up for 2012.

In the next report, Andy will be talking about Glavon’s Xmas bash, which is at the Highwayman Inn at Elkstone. As well as the Xmas nattering and the New Year walk hosted by the Inds. Oh, and also: Happy New Year!

A contingent of Glavon members made the pilgrimage in September to Goodwood, along with 138,000 other people to the annual Revival Race Meeting. The event gets better and bigger every year and so do the crowds. The pre-1973 car park could provide a days entertainment on its own. A highlight of the weekend was the number of Spitfires in the air marking the 75th anniversary of the plane’s introduction and with ten in the air on the Sunday was probably the largest such gathering since the war. Weather conditions elsewhere unfortunately prevented a further four from joining the formation.

October 2nd saw temperatures rising to record levels for the time of year which helped swell the numbers attending Bristol Motor Club’s Spirit of the 60s day held at National Trust owned Dyrham Park, north of Bath. Marking 50 years since the club first ran Hillclimbs at this picturesque venue, cars of the period including many which actually competed in the original events between 1961 and 1966, gathered for demonstration runs up the hill. There was an amazing display of period machinery including many seldom seen specials and kit built competition cars which were so successful in the 1950s and 1960s and gave many people their first opportunity to get into motorsport at a reasonable price. Of all the cars doing the demonstration runs, TRs were the most numerous and were grouped together giving a great display on the hill. Living only ten minutes from Dyrham we took a 60 mile detour home in the company of another TR to take advantage of what has proved to be the last really hot day of the year. Here’s looking forward to next summer.

By the time this appears in print, the Quiz Night organized by Phil and Alison Critchley and the AGM will both have taken place and no doubt the firework night hosted by Chris and Jan at Oldbury on Severn will have gone with a bang.

Coming up:

10th December: Glavon Christmas party at the Highwayman Inn between Cirencester and Cheltenham. The New Year’s Walk will surely be as popular as ever.

5th February: the Sunday meeting will be at the Cotswold Edge Golf Course near Wotton-Under-Edge for a relaxing traditional roast lunch.

Glavon also look forward to welcoming all those who have booked for the Limpley Stoke weekend in January and if you’re thinking of attending in 2013, keep an eye out for next year’s adverts and book early.

International! I won’t waffle on about it. Glavon was quite tame this year, although over twenty members arrived after the long journey to Harrogate on Friday afternoon. We took our time to pitch up and settle in the new surroundings. Most of us went to a local pub down the road, the Kestrel Inn, for the evening meal. By the time we got our food and got home the entertainment was over so an early night for us. Saturday was a day of shopping at the stalls, with several of us coming back with arms full of parts and bits and bobs. Lesley and Alison spent some time doing dancing and balancing with Ross Swift. In the afternoon, some of us went to Harrogate centre and some went on the fun run. The views were lovely. Whoever planned the run, well done and thank-you. Saturday night was like a campfire evening, singing songs and just time relaxing with a beer under the stars. Several went down to the hall for the disco meeting up with other groups for a chat. Sunday was spent looking for bargains, watching the awards giving and some packing away. A lot of us were staying an extra night or making a holiday of it and staying for a week. Yes, Harrogate was different but it is good to change once in a while.

Saturday 6th and Sunday the 7th of August was the Steam extravaganza at South Cerney. Thirteen cars were on Glavon’s stand including TS2 and the Coca Cola car. The whole weekend was fantastic.. We had a lot of interest from people about the cars, asking questions to all of us. It was nice looking around the steam engines, planes, steam fair ground and cars. It is a great day/weekend out with family and friends so pencil it in your diaries for next year. Thursday 18th August was a natter and noggin which I have said before is getting very popular. There was to be a treasure hunt around the area of Hunters Hall but this was rearranged for another Thursday meet due to rain.

Sunday 4th of September is always a struggle for some members to attend but we still plan for a convoy out and about. Maddog organised the event doing a Cotswold run starting at Cirencester, heading  through little villages, scenic views, sunshine and of course a ford. We arrived at 4 o?clock finishing at a Glavon member pub, The George at Kempsford, for sausage and chips. Thanks goes to Maddog. The upcoming events is the Critchleys quiz on the October Thursday meet. Bonfire and firework night Saturday  5th of November. All are welcome to attend.
