TR Action 228
What a difference a month makes, or in the case of TR Action editions - six weeks. Dave Rumens described in the last article the arctic conditions experienced over Easter but predicted a good summer. Well, so far the sun has shone on KVG events so let’s hope Dave’s prediction is more accurate than that of weatherman Michael Fish.
May club night was our annual “Clean Car” competition and it was of little surprise that the winner was Joe Douthwaite with his lovely TR4A, joint second was Bill Bourne (TR6) and Michael Field (TR5). This is the second year in succession that Joe has won the cup so I urge you to keep polishing because if he wins again we may have to consider creating a “Master Class” just for him and let him keep the cup.
In the middle of the month KVG attend Basingstoke Festival of Transport, organised by the Thorneycroft Society and held in the Memorial Park. The whole park is filled with vehicles of all types and is well worth a visit. Being early in the year it is heavily dependent on the weather, one year being cancelled because it rained so much the park was too soft to drive vehicles across. This year the weather stayed fine and the show was a sell out. KVG put on a good display with fifteen cars which included TS2 (see photo). Thanks to Julian Taylor for collecting TS2 and to Michael for organizing the show. To cap a great day, Chris Cunnington, Register Chairman, made a surprise visit in his TR4A.
First weekend of June was the Beale Park Thames Boat Show, a three day event with a wide variety of things to do and see. The weather was hot and sunny all weekend and the new KVG gazebo was given its first trial and kept us all from getting sunburnt. KVG were joined on the Sunday by members of the Chiltern Group. Fifteen cars were displayed ranging from TR2 through to TR7 and a few Grinnalls for good measure. A very enjoyable show and great to meet up with Chiltern group and to talk to visitors to the show. We actually signed up a new Register member David Narbett who hasn’t got a TR yet but is looking to buy a TR7 – welcome to you. Thanks to Michael and Linda for the supplies of tea and coffee they provided throughout the weekend from their Motorhome.
I hope to see lots of you at the International weekend 18th – 20th July, hopefully without the monsoon rain of last year. Contact Dave Rumens for a weather prediction. And finally we have booked a club stand for the Leukaemia Classic Car Show at Newbury racecourse. A worthy event to support as funds raised are for charity. Contact Michael Field for an entry ticket.
TR Action 227
The weather is a fickle thing. As I make a start on this news it’s early April, snow is falling and the temperature is around freezing. Back in March this was the scene that also met us on Easter Sunday, this being the day before the Wyke Down event was due to take place. As a result the decision was taken to withdraw KVG’s attendance. However, a number of brave souls, Graham and Tina and Tony, did attend to fly the TR flag. Sorry if I have missed anybody out who also went. The general comment from those that did go was the very cold wind and that they left the event early due to the poor weather conditions. Rumour has it that a polar bear was seen driving a TR6; this may sound unlikely but it was very cold. Hopefully the weather will be a bit kinder next year. As interest, Phil H went to the Colesford Festival of Transport on the same day and said the weather conditions were subtropical. Must be all the heat from those V8 Grinnalls.
With the days now drawing out the attendance at our main April meeting was high, not that it has been overly down over the winter months as all the normal suspects have been present. The mid-monthly meeting in April was at the Crown & Garter located near Inkpen and was also very well attended with lots of the normal banter taking place. Yes Peter, you were right, I did eat too much. Whilst we are on the subject of the mid-monthly meetings the venue(s) is at present under discussion, so please come to the meetings to find out more.
According to the weather people, on average, if we have a poor March/April there is every chance we will get a good summer, so we should have a great season this year. With that in mind here are a few of the future events not to be missed. The joint Dorset Group/KVG Merley Weekend will be on 13th, 14, 15th June. On Sunday 29th June we are meeting at 10.30 at the Crofton Beam engine, which will be in steam. In the afternoon Peter Heywood has planned a run though the beautiful Wiltshire countryside to the Ramsbury Brewery for a picnic and a tour. The tour of the brewery has been arranged by Peter Woolnough. Our annual BBQ is on Sunday 6th July and will take place at Snelsmore Common just north of Newbury on the B4494 Wantage road. As last year the local TSSC, Newbury area, have been invited.
Finally, welcome to new TR Reg member Alistair Galbraith who has a white TR5. Alistair also has a number of other non-TR Triumphs and from this you can judge he has a very keen interest in the marque.
Keep TRing.

With all the skill of a tabloid editor Richard Roberts gave me, the least qualified KVG member, the job of writing the group report. These days I just never manage to get to meetings so really I only have a vague idea of what has been going on. It is a shame because it seems that I am missing out – even during the supposedly quiet winter months.
Friday 29th January saw the annual TSSC and KVG dual take place in the skittle alley at The George & Dragon, Wolverton Towns End. You would be forgiven for thinking that the weapons of choice were wooden balls & pins however you would be wrong, this year we all had to rely on our intellect. The members of the KVG had become weary of continually winning the skittles matches so to give TSSC a chance we challenged them to a ‘pub quiz’. For the TSSC members it must be the fun of taking part because KVG teams came first, second and third to take the ‘skittles’ trophy home for another year. It was an excellent quiz enhanced with John Edmonds’ excellent picture section.
It was, in my opinion very brave of Richard Roberts & Michael Field to announce that we were having the AGM on the March 5th club night; I just knew the turnout would be poor. Well I was wrong as we had in excess of 35 people there which I think has to be a record. This makes it hard to renege on all those promises made. I am not going to write a blow by blow account here – I think we are able to post the minutes on the web site, so I will do this. However there are few points worthy of note; all the people involved in the running group have been retained, we have a stock of regalia items that needs to be sold, £150.00 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Relief and we will possibly be moving venue for our monthly meetings. The details of the latter will be confirmed on our web site.
Michael Field is now making full use of the internet for posting our future events. As well as the KVG section on the TR register web site Michael is using the Google Calendar service: http://www.google.com/calendar/render. Once on the site you need to enter the e-mail: kvg-tr-events@talktalk.net, and password ‘triumph’ I think this is a really good idea and you will find details of the following events and many more:
Basingstoke Festival of Transport, KVG stand booked; we also have TS2 to display - 11 May
Beale Park Thames Boat Show & Classic Cars - 6 -7 June
Merley, Dorset camping weekend - 13 – 15 June
Our group enjoys excellent support but we always like and need new faces, so please come along and join in.
