Hopefully, by the time you read this, the weather will have improved and there will be many more TRs in action. Recent meetings have been ‘Wet, Wet Wet’ or ‘White, White, White’ as evidenced by this photo of all the TRs that made it to the LVG February meeting! In fact, apart from Lynda and myself, the only other member that arrived was Jon Marshall - even Diana declined. Personally, I enjoy the challenge, but sadly, that was the last of the snow and we were too busy to get out again before it was all gone. Who's afraid of a little bit of snow and salt? Readers of our newsletter ‘TRunnion’ will be aware that we are planning to introduce a little more variety into the events calendar this year with greater emphasis on using the cars, including mid-week/evening runs, visits to race meetings/sprints/hillclimbs, transport museums and other local groups, etc. Some new ideas have already surfaced but we really would welcome suggestions from all members in the area, especially newer members and those who cannot attend the regular monthly Sunday lunchtime meetings. Those of us addicted to touring are already looking forward to some action in the next few weeks, including the CACCC Springing-Up Tour and MK Classic Tours’ Drive It Day event with a drive on the Alpine Circuit at Millbrook, The Porsche Driving Experience at Silverstone and a visit to Prodrive to see their famous display of competition cars including the new WRC Mini. At the end of April, there is a Nostalgia Forum Motor Sport Film Show, with guest speaker, five times Grand Prix winner, John Watson MBE. Unfortunately, I will miss this, as we will be on a Sporting Bears tour in Cumbria, but Lynda and I have been to a couple of these quarterly events and can highly recommend them. The classic car season really takes off in May with too many potential shows to mention here, so make sure you are on my mailing list. All recent TRunnions are available on the website, but if you are not already receiving them directly, it is probably because I do not have your current email address. I only have email addresses for just over half the local members, and many of those are out of date. To keep in touch via TRunnion (or to contribute letters, articles or photos), email me at bjmole1-trlvg@yahoo.co.uk. Check the website (www.groups.tr-register.co.uk/lea-valley) regularly for the latest information on meeting venues and additional events.
Well, here we are at the start of the 39th year of LVG. Another successful AGM was held at the December meeting and I am grateful to Jon for producing the minutes so quickly that I was able to include them in the Jan/Feb TRunnion. Once again, the buffet proved popular, so much so that the front room of The Cock was at bursting point. As a result, Julian Hensman and Graham Wade 'took the Group Leader's shilling', considerably strengthening the committee. I confess I have to apologise for the press-gang job and I take sole responsibility for it – I am just a bad person! Seriously though, I felt we really do need to encourage and involve newer and younger members in order to revitalise the group. Graham and Julian (with Magda) have become welcome regulars during the past year and from previous conversations, I know they have ideas and interests that can extend the range of activities the group undertakes and attends. As newcomers joining the committee, and also with TRs at opposite ends of the specTRum, I hope others will feel that the group is moving forward and also that they are better represented. Thanks to both of them for taking it so well.... so far! However, it is not simply down to the committee to run the group; remember that we really do need all members' ideas and fresh perspective on what they need and expect of their local group. Contemplating the start of the new year, I am reminded that February marks 40 years of TR ownership for me. Where has the time gone? I may be a lot older and a little wiser, but I still feel 25 years old when I am out in the TR. That just encourages me to make the most of every opportunity to use it and I TRust you all feel the same. In fact, we have already got the year off to a flying start with MK Classic Tours' 'The First Run'. It was reassuring to see several TRs on the run, along with many other classics out and about on the day. Clearly, there are still plenty of other people who also continue to use their cars all-year round. Once again, the New Year Lunch was a success with numbers strictly limited to 25 by The Cock's small dining room. Nice to see some new faces, along with the usual suspects, although a TRifle cramped. The events calendar is taking shape and we will be hosting a talk by Ian Cornish on ‘The Works TR4 Rally Cars’ on Sunday 25th March in Baldock, Herts. All groups are welcome - details will be posted on the website and in TRunnion.

It is hard to believe that this is the last Social Scene report I will be writing in 2011, although by the time you read it, the club and group AGMs, Christmas and New Year will already be a hazy memory. The year has flown by and I suspect that is due in part to the number of TR events that we have been involved in, either as a group or as individuals. I won’t bore you with a list here but if you are not yet a regular at group meetings and events, and are not yet on the email list for newsletters, then you can still see what we have been up to by reading copies of 2011’s TRunnions on our website. We very much enjoyed the Nostalgia Forum Motor Sport Film Show with special guest Stuart Turner, motoring author, former BMC and Ford Competitions Manager and one-time Standard 10 and TR2/3 rally competitor (won the first British Rally Championship in 1958 as co-driver to Ron Goldbourn in a TR3A). Lynda and I were proud to display our TR3A as part of a special line-up of significant models used by Stuart during his competition career and fortunately the weather was excellent, so another topless day. The next film show is a double-bill ('Theme Lotus' with guest speaker Jackie Oliver and ‘The History of Snetterton Motor Racing Circuit’ with artist and Snetterton historian Andrew Kitson) on 28th January, so you should still have time to book. Although for some members, the TR season is over and the car tucked away in the warm ready for spring, I TRust our TR3A will not be the only TR in the car park at monthly meetings. However, you don’t need to come in a TR – this time of year is an ideal chance to come along and help plan the forthcoming year’s calendar. Suggestions for different events and activities will be gratefully received, especially those which involve driving our TRs. For those who are rebuilding or newer members perhaps carrying out winter maintenance for the first time, there will always be plenty of advice and offers of help. Finally, as a reminder of the summer, here is a photo taken by Magda of one of our newer members, now a regular, Julian Hensman reflecting on having the only TR6 at the Knebworth Classic Car Show this year. Check on the website for alternative venues and further events which may be added. To keep in touch via TRunnion (or to contribute letters, articles or photos), email me at bjmole1-trlvg@yahoo.co.uk.
