Spares News Number 12 - April 2008
I see from Andy's last email that we have a number of new additions to the Lincs circulation list. For those new people my function is to act as a clearing house so that your surplus TR spares are found a new home. We all have parts that are surplus to our needs and if they can be passed on to another member for mutual benefit so much the better.
Please remember that by and large original serviceable old parts are usually better in quality that the modern "replacement" part. ( Editor's note: See me if you want to get your ears bent on this topic!)
Of course if you need parts no matter how trivial it might appear please let me know and I will circulate it to the others. Remember one person's junk is another's treasure trove!

Silicon Brake Fluid Labels
Do any of you use silicon brake fluid in place of the original specified fluid? Would you like a dedicated label and cable tie to attach it to the master cylinder so as to warn others not to mix fluids? Then apply to Malcolm Brown he has a number surplus to his requirements together with a cable tie for attachment and the best bit is they are Free, yes that's right no charge! so contact him at malcolm_sherry.trlincs@yahoo.co.uk to arrange a deal.
Interchangeability of parts
Malcolm Brown rang me recently to discuss his Brake master cylinder problem on his 4A . Basically his wasn't working ie totally shot. I knew that a master cylinder from a GT6 would fit a 4/4A they have the same bore (0.7in) so same pedal effort the only visible difference being the reservoir, which is usually made of plastic rather than cast aluminium. The other major difference is the price the 4/4A cylinder (part number 132909 / GR64067671) retails in the region of £90 whereas the GT6/Vitesse (part number GMC209) is some £20 CHEAPER. There are savings to be made if you have the appropriate information.
Early Clutches
This next part is addressed to all members with TR2/3/4 and the old type of clutch i.e. NOT of the diaphragm variety. Are you aware that a conversion to a diaphragm clutch is straightforward all that is needed is a clutch cover & plate from a Triumph Stag and the release bearing changing. Full details can be supplied to interested parties please contact me directly. (Ed's note: I have information concerning the Toyo replacement release bearing I can share with you if you want.)
There are many more instances of part interchangeability especially with electrical items.
LEDs
There is understandably a concern within the group and perhaps elsewhere about the level of illumination afforded by our exterior lighting especially the lighting that faces to the rear. Modern vehicles display a much larger area of illuminated area than do our classics so what to do? I have via Malcolm Brown found a source of LEDs that are a direct replacement for the existing bulbs. Crucially they also offer a resistor that ideally needs to be soldered or Scotch locked into the wiring. You need a resistor for the flasher circuits because our flashers units will not work without the correct resistive loading. I do not believe that a resistor is required for the rear lamps, ideally you also need a resistor for the stop lamp bulbs so that the brake light switch will continue to function over time. However though the brake switch will work without the resistors the flasher circuits WILL NOT.
I have asked the question about light output versus standard tungsten bulbs and I am assured that is approximately double the level of illumination compared to an ordinary bulb. I think that the LEDs with the 360° (Ed: this cryptic bit to be investigated!) light output are the most likely candidate for our needs, also they should I think that the LEDs should be clear rather than coloured so as not to compromise the illuminated colour of the lenses. The website is http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/
Can I ask that you each look at the website and if there is sufficient firm commitment I am prepared to make a group approach with a view to a bulk purchase. It may be possible to negotiate a better price. Please let me know your thoughts.
Well I seem to have gone a bit this time but please remember all items required or not required please let me know, adverts will be forwarded within the group.
Best wishes

Something different
Our honourable Treasurer - Malcolm Brown has come across a source of LEDs that fit directly in place of the lower wattage incandesant bulbs the web address is www.ultraleds.co.uk
There appear to be some advantages; the lamp will be much brighter and they are available in different colours but as ever there is a potential problem. The current consumption is quite small so that replacing conventional bulbs with these items could give problems with the operating switches that power the lamps. I will not bore you the technicalities of this but trust me!
However they do have an obvious application if you want to put on additional lights on your TR (I run 3 Stop/Tail lamps on my 3 which overloads the brake light switch) The other potential application that I can think of is lighting for a trailer.
Anyway these LEDs are expensive but last a mega long time. It might be possible to obtain a volume discount if we all buy together. Can I ask that you each look at the site and decide if you are interested let me know and we can go from there.
Keep the adverts rolling in.
