London Groups News - 1st April 2009
The sun is now making an appearance, the weather is getting a bit warmer, so thoughts are turning to top down motoring.
Easter activities
Ivor Duarte has emailed me with details of one Easter event for Good Friday. I think Ivor’s email explains it all.
Here is the website for Wheels Day, an event which members might like to attend next week. http://www.freewebs.com/wheelsday/weelsdayinformation.htm
Although there are the usual Classics, even some TRs, the event is predominantly customs and rods and Yanks, and as Customisers are heavily practical people there is an excellent spread of trade stands selling tools & parts & materials. This is the big season opener in the Custom Car world, a chance to see something a bit out of the ordinary - over 2,000 cars.
The nearest postcode I can find is GU11 1SQ but there is a map on the website and the event is well signposted. Please note that the venue - Rushmoor Arena Aldershot - is no longer an arena, just a big field, and is nowhere near Rushmoor village.
The traffic in Aldershot on event day is horrendous, so I highly recommend that anyone wishing to go should arrive when gates open at 0830h, assuming you wish to show your car which you can do just by presenting yourself at the entrance with no form-filling. If you are just spectating I would still get there by 0900h even though it says gates don't open until 1000h. Otherwise you will get seriously stuck in the jams. This is the 35th year of the event.
On Easter Monday there is a classic car show, autojumble and car boot sale at Wyke Down, Picket Piece, Andover, Hampshire, SP11 6LX. It is just turn up with no need to book your classic car space. Keith and I have been along the last 2 years and there has been a good turnout of all sorts of vehicles. Nothing has been formally organised for this: it is a case of doing your own thing.
Drive it Day
Sunday 26th April is ‘Drive it day’. Mark Treadwell, South East co-ordinator, has organised special parking for TRs and group rate entry in to Amberley Working museum. There will be a prize for the group whose cars cover the greatest number of miles getting to the event. London Group should be able to win this easily – just let Bob Cornwell lead the convoy, remove his satnav and, if we all follow Bob, we will cover twice as many miles as we need to. There will also be a prize awarded by the museum curator for the car he would most like to drive home. The museum is home to many bygone industries, is set in an old chalk pit and has much to offer, including nature walks. We will organise a meeting place ready for the convoy. If you haven’t already done so, please could you let me know if you are thinking of coming along.
Kent tour
We have received an email from the Kent Group with details of the Kent tour. We have taken part in the tour in the past and had great fun – especially with some of the roads – hmm, calling them roads might be a slight exaggeration. Again the email explains it all. Greetings from the TR Register - Kent Group, with an invitation to join our Kent Tour on Sunday May 17th. We will meet at The Moat Pub on the A20 at Wrotham, at 10.30 hrs for 11.00 hrs departure, for a not-too arduous drive in the attractive countryside of West Kent and East Sussex, stopping for a pub lunch and then calling at a place of interest in the afternoon. (Bring National Trust membership cards if you have one, just in case.)Rally plaques and tulip-type route instructions will be provided. Cost will be £6.00 per car. Pay your own entry into place of interest. Please contact Colin Addison at, preferably, c.addison@kgsdiamond.com
Standard Triumph Day
This year Standard Triumph day will be held on Sunday 24th May 2009 at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, near Cambridge, CB2 4QR. Full details can be found on this website.

London Group camping weekend
The date has now been fixed as the weekend of 26th, 27th and 28th June. The venue has yet to be decided but we are trying to find a campsite with a pub adjacent. The following website has a list of pubs with campsites: some are very basic and others a bit more upmarket. If there are reviews, these can be quite interesting reading to get a better picture of the facilities. If anyone fancies suggesting a place to camp, please feel free – just bear in mind that it has to be reached fairly easily on a Friday afternoon/evening from the south and west of the London area.

Just a slight cause for concern. It has been reported that Roger Hogarth’s TR4A is minus its wheels and has been left standing on piles of bricks. Just wondering where the local thieves have deposited the wheels. So if you see a set of wires being offered cheap in a pub, they might just be Roger’s.
That’s about all the news for now. Hope to see some of you at one of the events.
