TR Action 237

The show at Glamis is our main national meet and despite indifferent weather we had a grand time. Saturday was the best day as far as meteorology was concerned, Sunday was rain during the night and damp and misty during the day. Members from Clyde Valley, Grampian and Tay combined to make this event and as we had eighteen cars over the two days we all had a great time. I would also like to thank the Register for the support and help in showing interest in the Scottish groups with the crew in the shape of Brian Sparrowhawk and all the equipment and ephemera of a "roadshow".This gesture I can assure you was greatly appreciated and will no doubt be mentioned in times to come. Very many thanks.
These static gatherings do not appeal to everyone; those with action in their veins can feel frustrated but this, I feel, is outweighed by the pleasure given to the public, both young and old. Sad to say I feel I am in the latter category, but only just. This year we had a surfeit of TR6s, three TR7/V8, five TR2s and TR3s and three TR4/4As.
The movement, excuse the pun, as it can best be described, never fails to surprise when a chap boldly wearing a shirt with MG stamped on it approached our stand and asked to speak to me. He introduced himself and asked if we as a local group would be interested in any shared activities with them. We spoke at length and hope to arrange a meet with them once the views of the rank and file are known.
On a personal note I took my Southern Cross along with my TR4 and several of the older fraternity recognised the Gloria and reminisced. One such gentleman who is in his late 80s and still driving on a day to day basis asked me several questions on the car and as an aside right at the end he said he had a Vale Special. This was a glorified roller skate built in Maida Vale in London in the early 30s based on Triumph mechanicals and very low. This fascinated me instantly and I have an invitation to go and view the car. I will try and obtain a picture although I don’t think the car is in pristine order, but it is still part of Triumph`s sporting past. Those who are interested, look it up on the web.
That is all for now. Enjoy your cars

The year has begun and one member of our group has savoured success in The Great North Challenge in difficult conditions with his TR6. Duncan Massie and navigator Ron Duncan competed in Scotland’s version of the Monte and with a commemorative start in Glasgow to mark the 60th anniversary of the Glasgow start, the weekend of the 23rd to 25th January tested some doughty crews. Duncan and Ron excelled themselves with a win in class and third overall. A truly outstanding result. The rally also had a 90 mile night section in ice and snow and this certainly tested the endurance of both cars and crews.
The month of February will see the group leaders meeting to discuss the year’s events and this will be reported in a future issue.
The social aspect this year at Christmas was an evening with a Cluedo-type Whodunit? murder scenario held at the Royal Hotel in Forfar. Of the eight tables competing we won the "competition" and free wine then flowed.
The next issue will contain some local events over the coming season so watch this space.
I leave you with an early shot of some real action.
TRiumphantly yours.

The time of year - and what a year - brings us, one hopes, to think of each other. I hope that our membership, both in the group and the greater movement can stop and reflect on how we can help each other.
On a personal note I have people to thank from within the group and the club for kindness and consideration shown to me this year. I will not name names but they know who they are. Thank you.
The end of the year has been quieter but we plan to have a gathering towards the end of December to end the year in style.
On the car front it has been quiet with my TR4 receiving some attention to its carburettors which is long overdue and the re-chroming of the rear bumper due to a rough patch and also a little dent someone not a million miles from me inflicted on it. I hang my head in shame.
Once again, thank you for your support and I wish you all, from myself and the Tay Group, to all who know us and especially to the other Scottish Groups, seasonal greetings.
