TR Action 241

It is appropriate in this first issue of the New Year, to mention that 2010 is TVG’s 40th Anniversary. This is quite a landmark, since TVG was the first local group to be formed under the TR Register ‘banner’ in 1970. To mark this event, we shall be holding a buffet luncheon at The Onslow Arms, West Clandon on Saturday 5th June, to which the Executive of The Register, together with past and present members of TVG are invited (please see the Noticeboard for further details).

The somewhat unfriendly weather around Christmas and New Year has curtailed the use of many TRs. At one point I didn’t use mine for two weeks - something of a record and boy, did I get withdrawal symptoms. However, on New Year’s Day a sprinkling of us appeared (with TRs) at the now traditional Club Meet at Brooklands, which was most enjoyable.

On the 25th January, our New Year lunch and prize-giving was held at The Barley Mow, with forty six members in attendance. Mervyn Rogers once again won the Attendance Award, which was a minor miracle bearing in mind the 6/7 week TRip which he and Carla made round Western Europe and the subsequent mechanical problems suffered by his immaculate and usually very well behaved TR6. The ‘Black Horse’ was awarded to Jon and Frances Gordon for their efforts in organising the TVG TRip to Dumfries and Galloway at the end of August. They did not quite manage the weather as we would have wished, but the whole tour was considered a great success. Peter Rocks is the ‘Mechanic of The Year’ for his lengthy, painstaking but enjoyable and very rewarding restoration of his TR6. The big problem now is, what are Peter and Bill Wheeler going to do with all that spare time?

Dave Goswell received a bottle of wine as thanks for the organisational effort that he and Janet put in to the TVG trip to Bodiam Castle earlier in the year, which was very well attended and much enjoyed by all participants. He was also (to his great surprise) the first recipient of a new award originated and presented by Alan Warburton – namely – the ‘Rubber Duck’ for the best convoy leader.

Finally, a ‘thank you’ bottle was presented to Dave Rigg and Belinda for their continued wielding of the TVG ‘corporate’ BBQ at both the IWE and our Autumn run. Not only do they set-up the equipment and oversee the cooking, but also produce exceedingly good accompaniments. Mention should also be made of their excellent breakfasts provided for those TVG members lucky enough to be camping at the IWE.

Finally, our AGM is booked for Sunday 25th April at the Onslow Arms, where the most important item is likely to be the election of a new Group Leader. In that connection, I am delighted that Mervyn Rogers has agreed to his nomination; I’m sure his election will be a mere formality and a great boost to TVG.

Happy TRing.

TR Action 240

So that is another year gone by, resolutions made and quickly forgotten no doubt. What are yours for 2010? Finish / start that project, use the car more even if it is wet, make an effort to get to the Onslow Arms on the last Sunday of the month or even the Abinger Hatch on the second Wednesday etc etc?

Before the evenings drew in at the end of October another very successful BBQ was held at West Wittering on the last Sunday in September. The sun prevailed throughout so much so that Gay K and Jean P donned their ‘cossies’ and went for a dip. Unfortunately, no one has been brave enough to supply me with a suitable photo of the lassies – I wonder why? Thanks as usual must go to the master chefs, Dave and Belinda – what would we do without them?

To add to his success at the International, Geoff K was invited to display his TR4 on the Register stand at the classic car show at the NEC in November. All that money lavished on the car is now seemingly paying dividends.

Fuel injection and 6 cylinders has finally got the better of Mervyn Rogers and the benefits of downsizing have been realised in the form of a pre-war Austin 7 acquired for his wife, Carla. This is not intended to be a project, just mild tlc required – how often have we heard that? It will be interesting to see who gets to the pub first!

Hopefully, we will be seeing Crispin with his ‘re-hipped’ master, Henry, early in the New Year, maybe at our lunch on the 24th of January all being well. Look out for his ‘white’ TR6 in the Barley Mow car park.

On that note, the New Year lunch has always been very popular and well attended by TVG members but not necessarily with accompanying TRs on this occasion; but there are few notable exceptions! Raffle donations, I am sure, will be welcomed; it is always fun to see those unwanted Christmas gifts.

On a personal note, I must commend Europe Breakdown Assist (mandatory with Towergate Ins.) for the very efficient service provided when my TR4 disgraced itself in Brittany last September. Provision of hire cars to continue the holiday and the repatriation of the TR4 some fourteen days after my return were very well organised. Being kept informed / updated regularly makes all the difference and reduces stress levels significantly. Mind you, prior to my timely intervention, delivery of the car was intended to be in an 18 metre artic - this would have been a spectacle in the narrow, congested side roads of Godalming. As you will see from the accompanying photo, common sense prevailed and all was well in the end.

Finally, Robin is currently collating the events calendar for 2010 and would welcome contributions / suggestions for inclusion; so don’t forget to keep up to date on www, brmmbrmm com or www.groups.tr-register.co.uk/thames-valley.

Happy New Year and safe TRavelling.

TR Action 239

In late August, seven couples (Steve and Sue Harridge – TR2, Geoff and Gay Keeble – TR4, Bryan and Jill Hirchfield – TR4A, Alan and Pauline Warburton TR4A, Roger Humphries and Caroline Evans – TR6, Mervyn and Carla Rogers – TR6 and Jon and Frances Gordon – Stag) set out for a six day tour of Dumfries and Galloway, based at Monreith House near Wigtown, the home of  Sir Michael Maxwell – nephew of the late Gavin Maxwell of ‘Ring of Bright Water’ fame. The TRip was organised by Jon and Frances who had met Michael via the Historic Houses Association, Monreith House being a Grade 1 listed Georgian Mansion, which Michael would like to see used by classic car clubs as a touring centre. Michael himself runs a very interesting Aston Martin DB4.

We had a pleasant two day outward journey, but some ten miles short of our destination Mervyn’s run of bad luck continued and next day it became obvious that lubrication to the rockers had failed and that was the end of his tour in the TR6. Jon and Frances kindly offered the spare seats in the Stag to Mervyn and Carla for the rest of the tour.

On the Saturday evening we were offered a BBQ by Gay’s sister’s family who live about twenty miles from Monreith. Michael and the DB4 were invited and he made Mervyn’s weekend by asking him to drive the Aston. My brother-in-law could not believe his eyes when a Stag, seven TRs and a DB4 lined up in his drive.

We were booked into the Car Show of the Kirkudbright Summer Festivities on the Sunday and although the weather was drenching there was a surprisingly good turnout. The whole area is most attractive and the roads excellent for ‘Classic’ touring - appetites may have been whetted for further adventures north of the Border.

Early September saw an ‘informal’ TRip to France when Tim and Shirley Harding – TR4 and Robin and Pat Powell – TR4A accompanied Richard & Betty Hunt - TR6 to their ‘chateaux’ in the Finistère.

After the ferry trip to St Malo the following week was spent convoying to various; Robin & Tim took turns following Richard as the oil fumes from Richard’s TR6 oil burner (1pint/100 miles) was addictive. Surprisingly, Robin’s TR4A was the first to misbehave when his electronic ignition packed up. Fortunately a set of points was cobbled together from the spares reservoir. The end of the week saw Tim’s TR4 spectacularly morph into a steam engine when the head gasket blew. Tim was understandably negative about the demise of his TR4, until the weather really warmed up and he saw the positive side of air conditioning in the hired eurobox. Notwithstanding the mechanical issues, the tours were enjoyed by all and both Mervyn and Tim’s cars are now fit and well.

Finally, confirmation that our New Year Lunch is arranged for Sunday 17th January at the Barley Mow.

Happy TRing.
