TR Action 257

We had to call February’s meeting off on the night, the forecast gave snow and true to form it started to come down early evening and settled. Not wanting to put members to risk Richard sent a mail out cancelling the event.

This month’s meeting was a nice dry one but unfortunately did not see any TRs in the car park. With the change of clocks, the April meeting should change that.

I went down to the Spares Day event at Stoneleigh in March, meeting other club members there. There was a very good turnout of cars on all the stands but the old problem was still there - the cattle sheds that the event is held in have no heating and are very cold. One good thing was hot teas and coffee in plentiful supply on the club stand.

We had an interesting guy down at our last meeting. He had owned TR2s, TR3s and TR4s in the past, and had the old photos to prove it and was looking to get back into a TR4 without too much work. I hope he gets fixed up soon; in the meantime he has a Midget to keep him occupied.

Another one of our members, Russ, is just starting the renovation  of a spare chassis he has had for a few years for his TR6 so we will be kept posted on the progress. Speaking to him, it seems it has rusted in the usual places.

I had a journalist down from Triumph World this month who is doing an article on my TR6 and JC Midge; (for those not sure what that is, it is a plans-only kit based on a Triumph chassis from the Herald range). So wait and see the outcome; we had a very bright sunny day but cold.

The next big event on the calendar is the Spares Day so as usual hope to get stocked up and find that hard to get spare. We have teamed up with another local car club and have a schedule of events over the summer to look forward to, more details from me or Richard.

Our meetings are the second Thursday of the month, 8pm at the Swan in South Milford. Now  the nights are getting lighter we will be having a run out meeting at 7:15 in the car park, so any local members are welcome to join in. Only a short run and we should be back for 8pm, providing no one gets lost…  it has happened before!

Now we have turned to a New Year and the nights are getting lighter, even though winter is far from over, we start thinking about getting on with the promised winter jobs. The ones around the house are usually to ones to get out the way first then back into the garage, wrapped up with heater on.

At our January meeting we had a lot of discussions on forth coming jobs and a new member with tales of his recent purchase of a TR4. So good to see cars are changing hands and owners are full of enthusiasm with their new pride and joy.

The next big event on the calendar is the Spares Day so as usual hope to get stocked up and find that hard to get spare. We have teamed up with another local car club and have a schedule of events over the summer to look forward to, more details from me or Richard.

Forgot to report in the last month’s report, but we had our elections for group co-leader and Richard was re-elected, so we have another positive year to look forward to. As before, our meetings are the second Thursday of the month, 8pm at the Swan in South Milford. As soon as the nights allow we will be having a run out meeting at 7:15 in the car park, so any local members are welcome to join in.

Another increase in numbers for November’s meeting so the nights are worthwhile again but let’s not rest, we do need any local members to come down and join in! It was only last week when I was in the garden and could hear that unmistakable sound of a TR6; sure enough it was a “K” registration maroon one, so if you are a local person please get in touch with either Richard or me.

Discussions took place on what events we should either go to or organise for next year such as the drive a classic day and the local aero day. It was suggested that other local clubs had already planned their calendar for next year and joining in with them could be a boost in numbers for both groups - always good to see a convoy of Triumphs.

On the mechanical front yet another problem with my TR6, a slight miss fire and a loud tapping noise. Once the cover was removed one of the roller rockers had broken, with the roller, pin and a section of alloy missing. Having stripped the covers off I have now found all the missing bits so feel lucky that they did not get caught up with any rotating parts. But again it did cause a lot of talk on the evening - the majority outcome was the opinion that I should have left it standard, just like uncle Triumph made it. In this case maybe they are right.

We would like to wish all group members past and future a Happy Christmas and hope to see you all in the New Year.
