TR Action 255

Snetterton Charity Race Day: After numerous changes to the original instructions, a cold dark Saturday morning found me alone in the middle of Snetterton Race Track wondering what hell I was doing there. Our fearless leader “King Soloman” had insisted that if we wanted to make sure of entering the event we must be at scrutineering at 7.00am.. Strangely enough nobody else appeared to have received this advice. In fairness Dave and Pete arrived very shortly after me. There followed two hours of madness ending with us ‘Registered’; ‘Holding Numerous Stamps and Badges’; ‘Decibel Tested’; ‘Wrist Banded’; ‘Briefed’ and ready for the public.
We were given virtually open use of the track, whilst keeping strict adherence to track and race rules, taking paying passengers as and when required. Much of the day was spent jumping in and out of a vast range of cars. Alan Wells, wearing his marshal’s jacket was kept busy. Dave Soloman likewise sporting a marshal’s jacket was ‘also there’.
It was a great pity that there was so much confusion in the pre-show notifications, because on the day a really great time was had by all. We had four TRs taking part and several members came along, I think we were the largest participating group, and all the members who were not able to join us missed out on a great day. Hopefully next year registration will be a lot clearer and we will have a full contingent, so watch this space.
Dave and Alan’s idea of volunteering for duty did in fact work very well as they finished the day in amongst the big boys cars and I understand had as many rides as they could shake a stick at.
TR Action 254
This edition of Wensum news is compiled from reports from members as I personally was not able to attend many events in September.
We start with the Seething Charity Air Display at Seething Aerodrome. This year’s Air Day took place on Sunday 11th September 2011 and once again featured a unique mix of trade and charity stands, classic vehicles, static aircraft displays, and of course over two hours of thrilling aerobatic and flying displays. An integral part of the event is the classic vehicle display and again the TR Register Wensum Group took part. A change this year was having the cars lined up along the grass and it was felt that although probably done for health and safety reasons this was not ideal. We look forward to seeing what the organizers plan for next year.
The Mile of Triumphs event as in previous years was held at Broad Farm caravan park Fleggburgh. The highlight of the event is the short run into Yarmouth for the cars to park up on the sea front for about two hours before returning to Broad Farm for a display and public vote pride of ownership type Concours event. The event is organized by the TSSC and supported by Club Triumph, Stag Owners Club and TR Register. Over 70 Triumph cars lined up on the sea front in Yarmouth and total participation in the event was probably about 100 cars as some people attended Broad Farm on Saturday but not Sunday (when the mile was actually staged) and not every car that attended Broad Farm on the Sunday went into Yarmouth. This event was much smaller than in previous years and it is hoped that the new TSSC organizers will involve Norfolk car clubs to assist with this meeting particularly Norfolk TSSC members who masterminded the original event. It was generally felt that the new format is missing something and really needs more input and effort if this once major event in the Triumph calendar is to survive.
Duxford 'All Triumph Day' was a great day out for all who attended. Following a gentle run from Norwich the group arrived and grabbed some breakfast then took a tour of the many hangers that house the superb display of flying machines and ground vehicles. As usual for Wensum runs the weather was super and the blue skies offered a great backdrop to the planes flying that day. In particular we were treated to a fly-past of the B-17 Flying Fortress as well as others. It is becoming traditional for the Wensum group to clean up at raffles and once again Oscar Edwards took first prize in the raffle, with David Solomon winning a Triumph ‘pinnie’ and I myself a new horn push for the TR6.
Finally on October 16th we visited Wing Commander Ken Wallis’s home at Reymerston Hall near Hingham in Norfolk. This was a very popular visit with both the TR Register and the Norfolk Stag Owners Club joining for this special opportunity to hear the recollections and see the collection of Ken Wallis the famous developer of the Autogyro. We were treated to a tour of the Hall and Ken’s hanger, crammed full of Autogyros of different designs and colour schemes from military versions to the famous ‘Little Nellie’ used in the filming of the James Bond movie: ‘You only live twice’. The visit culminated in Ken taking to the air in an Autogyro and delighting the crowd by hovering overhead without holding on to the controls then pausing to take photographs of the Triumphs gathered along the airfield.
Until next time, happy motoring.

TR Action 253
Apologies to all Wensum members as there was no report from me in TR Action edition 252 due to my being abroad for most of July and touring Wales in my TR for the rest however I can now provide you with a bumper report.
We start in early July with our second North Norfolk Country Byways Run – Nicknamed the ‘Redcoats Rally’ due to it being run so close to Independence Day in the USA. Mark Talbot created a super route through the Norfolk countryside beginning the day at ‘The Railway’ pub at North Elmham for a huge breakfast followed by a route that took us through Walsingham (drink stop) to end up along the north Norfolk Coast at Stiffkey for an excellent late lunch.
On the 17th Graham Carr held his second Broadland Treasure Hunt and Barbecue. Once again we were teased by cryptic clues to find our route but this did not deter Maggie who won the Treasure Hunt for the second year running with the fastest time of 56 minutes, beating all other contenders. Graham and Jean then treated us to a wonderful meal and were later presented with the 'Member of the Year' award by Group Leader David Solomon in recognition of their hard work organizing various club events over the last twelve months.
The International at the end of July gave us a chance to visit Harrogate and a large group travelled up to Yorkshire for the event. All of us agreed this was an excellent venue and felt the organizers did a super job of providing a varied program of activities for all to enjoy over the weekend. Highlights were the Hill Climb, Technical seminars regarded as a super addition plus of course the beautiful setting of the showground. Car of the show has to be Mark Winter’s beautifully restored TR4. Only completed days before the show Mark’s car provided a gleaming example of the TR4 at a show celebrating it’s 50th anniversary. The car glowed almost as much as Mark’s smile when he drove it. As part of the anniversary celebrations Mark Talbot's TR4 was selected to go into the ring for the TR4 line up and anniversary cake cutting. Once again throughout the weekend Graham and Jean catered for those camping – plus those who were not - and it is fair to say everyone had a great time.
August saw the Wensum group invited to the Stag Owners Club National day at the Royal Norfolk Showground. Numerous members were requested to display their cars in a Triumph Timeline and can be justifiably proud of the high standard of the cars we have in our group. The beautiful weather plus friendly welcome from the SOC organizers made this a very enjoyable day out. Fifteen cars from the Wensum group took part in the TR timeline with our regional coordinator Ian Freeman’s rare TR8 completing the line up.
Next was the Hunstanton Kite festival where we joined the Camb Followers to display our cars on a joint club stand. After a rainy start the sun came out to provide us a glorious day and to top it all the TR Register won the show award for best club stand. Peter Parkinson and his group decided to share the prize with Wensum despite the Camb Followers having the Lion's share of cars on display demonstrating real club camaraderie. Both group leaders jointly collected the award from the mayor of Hunstanton.
Finally the first run of September was the 14th MG Memorial Run, always a super route and excellently organized. Once again despite being organized by the Norwich MG Owners Club a large Triumph contingent turned out and the event started with fine weather. The route took drivers from Tibenham through villages such as the Pullhams , Harleston, Syleham, Stradbroke, Denham and Brundish until we reached our lunch stop at Snape Maltings. The return trip taking in Framlingham, Baddington, Dennington, Scole back the the Tibbenham.
Until next time Happy Motoring.
