Gls NOTES Twelve members attended the ten pin bowling at Shipley that is if we include young Alex and Angus Bower. Angus kept us on our toes as he persisted in lifting the bowl off the return rostrum and dropping it just missing his toes! The winners spoils went to John Hussey with Richard close behind. After the game we drove the short distance to the Noble Combe for lunch. We are nearly there MAY 1st IS TR TAX DAY. After the cold and the snow I am looking forward to pulling the TR out. The only problem is I striped the front discs off to replace them in DEC and they are still on the garage floor! I have been either ill or busy working on the house. I removed some poly tiles from my bedroom ceiling that have been there since the seventies and about a third of the ceiling came down. I must start on the TR. I just need to sort out a colour scheme for the bedroom but I am struggling. Why caren’t B N Q call red RED or blue BLUE? I looked at a colour chip called MUD HUT!!! I asked the girl what colour is this she said it‘s a sort of very dark orange. Why not call it “very dark orange?” God knows what colour Muddy Puddle is or Egyptian Cotton. Perhaps it’s an age thing. KEN MIKE AND I travelled to Leicester to this years Group Leaders meeting at Rothley Court. It was a long meeting but we covered a lot of issues to many to list here I will give a report at the next monthly meeting. Also we have spent today (Thursday) attending another meeting at the Yorkshire Show Ground. Along with our local group were many National committee members and representatives from other groups and two managers from the show ground Once again a long meeting but a lot of loose ends sorted out. And another tour of the site. All is going well I will report on this at the next monthly meeting. Do you think you can spot a good TR? Is your knowledge of Trs good? At the INTER NATIONAL do YOU fancy Judging at the Concours d’Elegance competition? If you have not done this before no problem you will be teamed up with an experienced Judge. Please contact me for details. Don’t forget subs are now over due. Evening meal at The Black Horse Askwith on the 26th of this month. PLEASE let us know if you wish to come. STAN LOWE
NEWS LETTER JANUARY 2011
.NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 2011 Our Christmas party last Friday night was a success, 24 people sat at two round tables. The meal was quite adequate for the price paid. The disco was as usual high volume so after a while we retired to an adjacent room and spent the rest of the evening chatting and socialising. The hotel provided us with extra complimentary coffee. Four members attended the Classic Car Club Quiz on Thursday evening and once again we defeated the large team from Craven Old Wheels by half a point. This is the second month on the run we have done this. We are looking forward to maybe winning by a “whole” point next time. The AGM will be held at the February meeting, Tuesday the 8th. Ken attended a IWE meeting at Harrogate last week, unfortunately, I was unable to go because of illness. Plans appear to be coming together and a further meeting is scheduled for April. I still need a few more volunteers to help out at the International Weekend. This may involve 2 hours on Saturday and 2 hours on Sunday or more if you wish. John Hussey is organising a trip to Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey Match in March (date tba) possibly with a meal before we go. If you are interested, please get in touch with John Hussey. We also have Ten Pin Bowling coming up on Sunday 27th March followed by lunch. If you are interested, please get in touch with Ken. Castle Howard plans are well advanced, more details later. Subs are now due. Please make cheques payable to Wharfedale Trs not to me please. Subs are £6.00. STAN LOWE

FBHVC News Warning about Antifreeze Technology moves forward and new products are constantly being launched with claims to improved formulations and performance. With the recent bitterly cold weather in January, antifreeze has been in the headlines with some alarming stories which at first seem to be about the well-known tendency of antifreeze to find the tiniest hole and cause leakages - but in these cases it has led to catastrophic engine problems. Traditional blue ethylene glycol is a toxic but highly effective antifreeze and contains silicates as an inhibitor to help prevent corrosion in an engine with mixed metals in its make-up. Bluecol and Blue Star are well known brand names and both of these are declared suitable for ‘classic cars’ on their company websites. Be aware that there are also low- or no-silicate ethylene glycol formulations (usually red) available which may not be suitable for all engines. Propylene glycol is another well-known and less toxic antifreeze formula and usually contains silicates but Comma, the main manufacturer, have now discontinued it in favour of an ethylene glycol product containing ‘bittering agents’ to make it less palatable and minimise the risk of accidental poisoning. Both of the above products use inorganic additive technology (IAT).           Recently problems have been reported concerning the use of antifreeze mixtures using organic acid technology (OAT). OAT was introduced in the mid-1990s and the products are biodegradable, recyclable and do not contain either silicates or phosphates and are designed to be longer lasting. However these products do seem to cause problems in older engines; over and above the ability of antifreeze to find the smallest crevice and leak, OAT antifreezes have been accused of destroying seals and gaskets and causing a great deal of damage in ‘old’ engines. For this reason the manufacturers do not recommend their use in historic vehicles. These products are usually coloured red, pink or orange.   The final category is HOAT. These products use hybrid organic acid technology in an ethylene glycol base with some silicates in the formulation alongside the organic corrosion inhibitors. The product is usually coloured green and is not recommended for use in historic vehicles. The Federation are still researching this problem but our advice at the moment is: A)        Only use blue coloured IAT antifreeze in historic vehicles; B)        Only use OAT products (‘advanced’ or ‘long life’ antifreeze) if the vehicle used it when new            and if specifically directed by the vehicle’s manufacturer; C)        Never mix different types of antifreeze without thoroughly flushing out the system; D)        Always replace the coolant within the time scale specified by the antifreeze manufacturer as the corrosion inhibitors break down over time.     STAN LOWE

Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run.       On Friday night Keith, Julie, Stan and I set off to meet up with the drivers on the reliability run at Blyth services on the A1. After a diabolical day of rain the weather was kind, a little cold but at least dry. The cars started to arrive about 21.15 and a steady stream followed. TS2 driven by Rob and Mark was the first to arrive shortly followed by the Coke TR7 driven by Matt and Wayne. A hot drink was the order of the day and stories were related as to the state of the rain on the journey and the short comings of TS2's windscreen wipers and lack of air conditioning, no such complaints from the coke car ( lucky bliters ) Of the 115 starters that had registered at the start approx 109 actually made Blyth as the first control, which was very impressive. A full selection of vehicles were represented TRs - all varieties, Spitfires. GT6's Triumph2.5's and 2000's, Dolomites and Sprints. The stop was timed at 10 mins but running repairs were taking longer, Wayne fitted a longer dip stick tube on the coke car to prevent any further oil leaks, hope this is the last foray they will need under the bonnet. As for TS2, no intervention was needed and Rob was up beat that it had run well and coped with the inclement weather so far. After all having a welcome leg stretch and being suitably fed and watered it was time to move on, next stop was Edinburgh. Good luck to both cars!   Don’t forget you can still contribute to this event which is raising money for charity MIND.   You can donate at http://www.justgiving.com/cokecar.   The Coke is being driven by Wayne Scott and Matt George, TS2 is being driven by Rob Murphy and Mark Tredwell. You can keep up to date with their progress by visiting The TR Register website and accessing the Reliability Run Forum blog.     Let’s give them our support.

                                                    Group Leader’s notes.

RED ROSE COAST TO COAST.

John and Helene Dennison, Jean and I joined the Red Rose group on their Coast to Coast run on Saturday the 26th June.

Starting in Morecambe at the Art Deco Midland Hotel, 29 cars started at one minute intervals. The run took us first north then turned east into Yorkshire. We stopped in Hawes for a coffee and toilets. By now of course the cars were dispersed into small groups of four or five and a few singles just cruising along.

The run terminated at Scarborough after 147 miles of beautiful countryside, motoring in perfect sunny weather. Everyone gathered at the Palm Court Hotel for an evening meal. Parking was difficult. We drove around for fifteen minutes or more before John D came to my rescue and pointed me to a car just leaving. I quickly took the space.

After the meal we nattered till late then left for our B and B. On Sunday Jean and I met up with some friends and spent the day in Scarborough.

CASTLE HOWARD

We arrived at the campsite before lunch time on Friday to find the Dennisons already there. During the afternoon others started to arrive and we managed to erect the new events shelter and the gazebo in time for our evening meal. Not having the instructions meant the gazebo was more than interesting to erect. I hope someone took notes.

Saturday morning’s convoy had to be split up into two groups due to the large number of cars. Gerry led the first group and John and Jean Hussey led the second group. Gerry had prepared a run through some magnificent country side using a lot of roads I for one didn’t know existed. We arrived at the Foxhound Inn pub in the village of Flixton for lunch. Thirty TRs and a Mini Cooper almost filled the car park. We had visitors from Red Rose, Northumbria, Leicestershire, East Riding, and Derby Dales. The afternoon was free to visit the coast or the surrounding places of interest.

Saturday evening most people cooked burgers, etc. on the BBQ we provided whilst others cooked on their own BBQs.

All food consumed, along with beer and wine, we then gathered in the events shelter and gazebo for the horse racing. HORSE RACING!!!!!! Yes horse racing. Ken Bailey had devised a game of racing. We had 24 horses. Each one could be bought for £2.00 each. Then everyone could bet on any horse of their choice. The racing progressed along a course moving one of the 9 spaces each time their number was drawn out. Along the course were 2 fences. To jump a fence the horse owner had to throw a dice to determine whether or not it fell or cleared the jump. This was absolutely fabulous. Funny, competitive, and heart breaking. I lost 40p on the night. The raffle was then drawn followed by a natter and a drink or two till late.

Sunday morning we dismantled the gazebo and shelter, and a few tents (we had to vacate the campsite by 4pm). At 11am we assembled for the drive up to the house. The cars looked brilliant in the sunshine lined up in the usual and appropriate horse shoe shape. Young Merlin Howard came out before his father to sit in and take pictures of our TRs. The Honourable Simon Howard made the award presentations at 12 noon. He then said a few words paying compliments to us and our cars.

The awards went to

TR 2/3 Peter How OAS 469

TR 4/4A Chris Lloyd LWC 837

TR5 Matt George VPB 761 F

TR6 Charlie Edge AWU 533 K

TR7/8 Brian Tully BWT 117 X

The BARBARA WARCUP plate was presented to Mike and Kate Sloan for their work on behalf of the club.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the gazebos, etc.

Thanks to Gerry and Mary for the run.

Thanks to Ken for the horse racing and his tote staff.

Thanks to everyone who donated prizes for the raffle.

Trip to Le Mans 24 hour Race.

Two TR 6's set off in convoy on Wednesday 9th June at 6.30 am. The first had Keith at the helm with the dubious honour of me as navigator; the second was driven by Stan with son Richard as co-driver.
The drive down to Dover was uneventful but this was made up for by the drive down to Le Mans. Various pieces of Keith's ignition system were replaced precariously at a variety of roadsides to try and rectify a misfire problem. Finally the condenser attachment was found to be at fault, a temporary repair was done and the problem was solved.

The journey continued in glorious weather with an overnight stop in St Omer. We arrived at Le Mans bang on rush hour as we were a little behind schedule. The first activity of the evening was an extended hunt for the elusive Camping Vert which we wouldn't like to say was difficult to find but needles and haystacks come to mind. We had to circumnavigate Le Mans amidst numerous cries from wound-down windows of "Have you seen Camping Vert?" as cars zoomed off in all directions seemingly able to find Camping Bleu, Camping Rouge, Camping Blanc but… no Camping Vert!

Armed with the comforting thought of 'seek and ye shall find' the intrepid four continued their search and eventually arrived at their pitch (of the pocket handkerchief variety) before nightfall. The tents were duly pitched and we went off to watch the qualifying.

On Friday we took in the elegance of the wealth of vehicles on display at the Car Show at Saint Saturnin. On Friday evening we went in to Le Mans to soak up the atmosphere and see the Drivers' Parade, blissfully unaware of the change in weather that was to come. To say the heavens opened during the night is to play the situation down somewhat. We awoke to find everything drenched but fared better than our near neighbours who were two feet under water. Much ringing out of clothes followed and Camping Vert was transformed into Camping à la Chinese laundry.

At 3pm the Race began with the traditional Le Mans start of drivers running across the track to their cars. Unfortunately, Nigel Mansell only lasted four circuits before hitting the barrier. The Race was won by Audi taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, an unprecedented result.
We had a good return journey after a super weekend spent in excellent company. Perhaps next time we'll remember to camp on higher ground, pack copious amounts of waterproof clothing and take pegs and a clothes line with us as a precaution.

Ken Bailey.

MAY NEWS LETTER

WHARFEDALE TR s NEWS LETTER MAY 2010

GROUP LEADERS NOTES

It is now confirmed that the INTERNATIONAL 2011 will be held at Harrogate.

This is very convenient for all the northern groups. We can all attend without the long journey down to Malvern. It gives those members who have never been to the International an opportunity to see what it’s all about.

It will no doubt require help from the local groups. We may have to lend a hand.

The International is of course a big financial commitment for the Register therefore it is important that we do what ever we can to ensure its success

I have written on a previous occasion on the subject of “what do we do with our TR Actions after reading them?” I seem to have hundreds of them, they turn up in draws, cupboards, suit cases, I have boxes full of them, and I even sleep on them they are under my bed!

Good news we are now up to issue 243 and the Register Committee has proposed to make the first two hundred of them available to members on a CD.

The TR REGISTER is once again putting on a stand at NEWBY HALL this year following the successful show last year. If you have not got an entry form let me know and I will request some more. Entry is £3.00. Numbers are limited!

We have issued an events folder for 2010; these were handed out at the Woolpack. If you haven’t received one please ask.

The Spring Clean run is on Sunday MAY 9th meet at the WEST SIDE Retail Park at GUISELEY 9.45am. It’s a nice easy run with a coffee stop and later lunch.

Kens Ten Pin bowling outing was again well attended. Every one played, but the stars were Andy & Amy Bowers children doing their best to roll balls weighing nearly as much as themselves down the lane. Perhaps they were trying to match their dad Andy, who scored the highest points of the day. Kieth George was second highest scorer.

Four of us attended the Inter Classic Car Club quiz on April the 29th .

We didn’t do too bad managing to finish in the middle somewhere. The winners were a group of four ladies who joined in to make up the numbers!!!!

The next quiz is on the 20th of MAY. Why not come along it’s a good night and doesn’t finish too late.

Julies theatre night is MAY the 25th but it’s to late now to book for this.

Some of us are going to the Scottish Borders week end. Its on the East coast this year at BUDLE BAY Campsite BAMBURGH, NORTHUMBERLAND. No doubt many of our friends from the Cleaveland and Northumbria groups will attend.

Camping is Cheap at £3.00 per night for a Medium Tent and £4.00 for Caravans and Motor Homes. Date is 29th to 30th MAY. The dead line for booking is the 14th MAY.

I have some entry forms. The campsite TEL is 07729681174.

The darts & pool match with the Cleaveland Group is on Tues 1st of June at Raskelf. If you need directions please ask. We need to win this year to preserve our dignity.

Our editor Mike Sloan is away and I don’t have the soft ware to produce a more

Professional paper.

NEWSLETTER JUNE 2010

GROUP LEADERS NOTES

Spring Clean Run

Good turn out for the Spring Clean Run, bit of rain at the start but not enough to spoil anything. We started at Guisley down to Otley then up to Fewston Reservoir area, then on to Stump Cross Cravens for a pre-arranged coffee stop. From there down to Appletreewick then on towards Barton turning off to go through Storiths via the Ford then on to Skipton and ended the run with lunch at the Copper Dragon Brewery.

Classic Car Club Quiz

Only Gerry LeVey and myself turned up for the quiz, however, we did the Club proud by winning. We actual drew with a 6 person team from Craven Old Wheels so it went to a tie-break and on the third tie-break we won. Unfortunately, the previous winners had not returned the trophy, so we left empty handed, but well pleased.

ALNWICK

Scottish Borders

Jean and I met up with John and Jean Hussey and John and Pat Collinson at Scotch Corner for coffee then drove North past Newcastle and followed the coast road to Budle Bay. On the way we stopped off for a couple of hours at Alnwick Water Gardens which was very nice. After a full day of driving in the sun we had to pitch the tents in the rain!. John and Pat went off to their B&B. Keith West and his son, Simon arrived in their camper.

CAMPSITE

Saturday morning convoy run was interesting TR’s everywhere completely lost. At one T Junction there were TRs going both ways. We eventually arrived at Floors Castle, 15 cars lined up at the front for a photo shoot. We enjoyed a tour of the Castle and had a picnic in the wooded area. In the evening we went to sea! The sea was rough to say the least, the cruise was a tour of the Farne Islands, we went out 5 miles offshore turned around the Longstone Lighthouse, famous for Grace Darling rescuing 9 people from the wreck of the SS Forfarshire which had floundered on the rocks. We also passed various bird sanctuaries where we saw thousands of Puffins and various other species. There is an estimated 160,000 nesting sea birds and their chicks. We also saw wild grey seals. Fantastic trip, but very cold, wet and choppy, well worth it.

Sunday morning convoy to cross the border again into Scotland to Gunsgreen, where we visited a living museum a relic from the smuggling days. The House was the home of John Nesbit who was a wealthy smuggler. After that we had lunch at the Ship Inn where we said our goodbyes to the Scottish groups. We stayed on for a further day at the camp site and returned in glorious sunshine once again down the Northumberland Coast Road stopping off at Almouth to have a picnic on the beach. All in all, an excellent weekend.

Reference Web Site

Unfortunately the TR Register have not changed our web site address in the TR Action. “We're only here for the beer section”. To access our site go to TR Register, then click on group details then follow the link to Wharfedale.

CASTLE HOWARD is just around the corner. Everything is going well. Just one more meeting to iron out a few things.

We will need help in erecting and dismantling the gazebos also tiding up the field after the event. . If you could lend a hand please let me know. As usual donations for the raffle would be appreciated.

Don't forget we are not providing food this year. There will be BBQ's to cook your own food on.

THEATRE NIGHT

Six members attended Julie’s theatre night at St Georges Hall. Paul Merton and his Impro Chums were very good; they put on a show improvised from suggestions from the audience. Very cleaver, funny and a bit blue at times. Thanks to Julie for organizing the visit.

DARTS AND POOL NIGHT

BRILLIANT what a turn out we actually matched the Cleveland group man for man.

The atmosphere was jovial, and of course we had the usual banter all night. With one last darts match to play we were trailing by one game so we had to win to achieve a draw. The tense match came down to the usual double one to win. No one could hit it! Then just as we were about to resort to a tie break i.e. nearest the bull, a Cleveland player got the elusive double one and so knocked us out. Shame. However it was an enjoyable evening. We didn’t win the raffle but we were served with a Tai supper.

Cleveland now have a new Group Leader Allan so it was nice to meet him and give him my commiserations on his new appointment.

Runswick Bay 14th - 16th May
It was a fine weekend for a trip to the coast, however not many Wharfedalers took part this year. Keith & Julie G, Jan & I joined in the activities on the Saturday only. We travelled in style, of course, but this time not in a TR6 but in Matthew G's newly MOTed (phew, thanks Dad!) Triumph 2000,with Keith at the helm. They do say neither a borrower nor a lender be but Keith makes an exception for cars, particularly when he's personally toiled away for many hours to get it through its MOT.
We had our instructions from said chauffeur to be standing by our rucksacks at 7am. Don't you hate it when you can't remember where you put your bucket and spade? Happens every year without fail.We arrived at the campsite at 9.30 am, to be rewarded with a bacon buttie and a cuppa in the brilliant May sunshine. How close to Heaven can you get?
We then did a recci of the campsite where we discovered Kenny, Karen and son in their luxury (it's all relative) motorhome. We were subsequently joined by Anne and Dave Whincup. Testimony to the fact that they must have had a good night - Anne was on a mission to retrieve headache tablets for one of their party, who shall remain nameless.
But… no time to stop and chat idly, tempus fugit, not only that but time was moving on. So we returned to the faithful Triumph and were whisked away to the Red Lion at Blakey Ridge for a hearty lunch. We did manage to catch up with one or two Red Rose members who were mostly sporting their reversible waterproof jackets complete with Red Rose logo. We are reliably informed that you can choose any colour as long as it's black (and you thought we'd moved on since those times!)
We were free to go where we chose after the convoy run (which wasn't a convoy run) where everyone just followed the set route either in groups or individually, due to the large number of vehicles assembled at the campsite. We all plumped for Whitby as they do a grand cup of milky coffee at one of the cafés by the beach (he said tongue in cheek).
Armed with our succulent burgers from the co-op (who says Keith and I don't know how to spoil the girls) we were to return to Runswick Bay campsite where we had a quick barbi before setting off back to sunny Bradford. Unfortunately, we had to give the evening's entertainment of a live group in the marquee a miss. The weekend seemed well organised and the Wharfedalers who were present on the Friday evening certainly appreciated the warmth of the marquee with quiz and friendly banter freely provided along with an adequately stocked bar.
Maybe we will endeavour to make the whole weekend next year. Anyone up for it? After all we've still got the Dracula experience in Whitby on the to do list. Jan warned me off it as she thought I might be confused with one of the performers and frighten visiting children…!
